Genuinely wondering 🤔

While YES there is crossover between caring for children and dogs, and YES even I make comparisons, I think we more often need to recognize the incredible species that are dogs. Because your dog is a dog, they’re not a child. And the needs and care IS vastly different. Maybe the love you hold for them isn’t different, but the needs and care absolutely is.

It would be ridiculous to ask your dog trainer for professional advice on your children, and it would be ridiculous to ask your kids second grade teacher for professional advice on your dog! 🤯

Last time I spoke about this topic I had a shelter tell me to delete my post because these are some truths some humans don’t want to hear…but I am here to speak for the dogs. And the reality is, the practices that are so commonly done with newly adopted dogs genuinely worry me.

I want dogs adopted into a new home to THRIVE and to stay in that home long term. But we ALL know the stories that are all too common of dogs being returned a week after they go home. Or at the very least, dogs aren’t started off on the right foot and stress is exacerbated, and problems develop within a year or two.

I want to start newly adopted dogs off in their new home with a regulated nervous system first and foremost, and help them and their owners find that regulation LONGTERM. That starts with the first few weeks! Let me know if you want me to make another post on what I WOULD do with a newly adopted dog! ⬇️

I don’t know why our society has completed detached ourselves from this fact…maybe it’s because we view dogs as cuddly couch potatoes? 🤔

But the fact of the matter is, many many common breeds out there were BRED to go after prey. That terrier in the neighborhood? Feisty little monster who just wants to kill some vermin. Your sweet lil Labrador? Bred to chase and carry a dead animal carcass for you. My own girl Hanalei? Yeah she wants to kill possums and chickens.

Does a dog who wants to go after small prey necessarily mean they’re a danger to other dogs or people? NO. Absolutely not. That in and of itself does not mean the dog is a danger. I would argue that a dog who wants to go after smaller dogs in a prey drivey way could be a danger to other animals though). But that topic gets really nuanced…

Dogs are still predators, no matter how we twist it. And they still have instincts they can and will (and should safely be able to) act on.

What part of prey drive does your dog enjoy, and how do you let them get it out? ⬇️ My girl Hanalei loves the catch and kill, so we play tug. My girl Tena loved the chase, so we do flirt pole!

One of the most important topics to talk about ESPECIALLY on social media…where context is often missed because we are only seeing really small snippets of dog behavior.

As trainers, we want to be really good at seeing the overall picture and bigger context of a dog’s life, and not just reducing their behaviors to being isolated events (which in my opinion, too many old school dog trainers do).

Everyone wants to argue about off-leash dogs BUT we need to look at the nuances of WHY off-leash dogs can be a problem. Because I truly don’t believe it’s just the off-leash part. It’s actually moreso the owners lacking connection and awareness of their dogs, as well as making assumptions when they’re out with their dog.

Like the assumption that just because your dog is friendly to some dogs, that they will be friendly to all dogs. My dog in this video actually was bit by a dog years ago in this EXACT SAME scenario: an off-leash dog out ahead of its owners, who were not paying attention. Their dog ran up and bit my dog and ran off.

The issue with dogs being off leash is truly so much more nuanced, and I don’t think yelling “leash your dog” is helpful. In this scenario, I was right there to handle that dog if need be, and that’s the best I could do. I wasn’t going to stop and yell at the owners to escalate the issue. I wasn’t just going to move through it quickly. But how frustrating is that, that I have to ensure I’m there to handle THEIR dog if need be? It’s not fair.

I really think some basic awareness of others would go a LONG way when it’s comes to off-leash dogs. Just recognizing that not everyone you see wants your off-leash dog in their space. So be aware of that, and control your dog accordingly…keeps everyone happy 🫶🏻

Fresh off a vet visit and got this on my mind! Vet visits have never really been all that fun but there’s a few things I do with both my dogs to set them up for success.

❗️I will add that for my nervous dog we muzzle her and take extra precautions with her, like maybe we leave her in the car until the vet is ready, instead of sitting in the lobby.

What have you found helpful? And what questions do you have? ⬇️
