SUNDAE UPDATE

Sundae had a CT scan yesterday, which gave the surgical team the information they needed to finalize a plan for next week's procedure. One of the coolest things I learned today is that the 3D printer isn't being used to create an implant. Instead, they're printing a full 3D model of Sundae's leg so the surgeons can practice the procedure before she ever enters the operating room.

This is a major surgery, and there are still decisions that may need to be made once the team gets in there. That's exactly why the CT scan was so important. It allows the surgeons to prepare for different scenarios and gives Sundae the best possible chance for a successful outcome.

What gives me a lot of comfort is knowing that she's receiving care at one of the best veterinary surgical centers in the country. She has an entire team of specialists planning every detail of her case, and it's hard to imagine her being in better hands.

Dr. Ortved told me that everyone at New Bolton is completely obsessed with Sundae. She laughed and said Sundae is "sunshine," and apparently she's become quite popular with the staff. No surprise there!

And one final piece of exciting news: we get to keep the 3D model of her leg when all of this is over! I can't wait to show it to you.

Thank you all for following along on this journey and for making this level of care possible. Every step of the way, I'm reminded that this tiny pony is loved by so many people.

Since I can't take any new photos of our precious girl right now, enjoy a little Sundae photo dump.

If you can help make this medical miracle come true for Sundae, please like/comment/share or donate! Every interaction makes a huge difference. It's the little things 💗

Love, Allison

Today, we made the journey to the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania to bring Sundae for her scheduled CT scan tomorrow. Their surgical team will those images to create a custom 3D-printed implant for her corrective leg surgery next week.

This first surgery is estimated to cost as much as $20,000. In a few months, we'll repeat the entire process for her other leg.

A lot of people will ask, "Why would you do all this? It's just a horse."

But to me, to us, Sundae is not just a horse. And even if she were, she would still be worth it.

She is part of the interconnected fabric of our community. As Chief Seattle is often credited with saying: "All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons and daughters of the earth."

Sundae's life matters because she is one of us. Her pain matters because she can feel it. Her future matters because she has one.

And so, with the full support of the many veterinarians, specialists, farriers, donors, volunteers, and advocates who love her and are cheering her on, we fight for her.

If you'd like to stand with Sundae as she takes this next step, please consider making a donation to Project Steve, sharing her story, or becoming one of her honorary Steves. Every dollar, every share, and every act of support helps give this little horse the chance she deserves.

I wanted to take a moment to appreciate Josh.

Most of you know me (Allison) because I'm usually the one behind the camera and keyboard, but standing beside me & every horse here is Josh.

He's the one fixing things in the evenings after he gets off work... Hauling hay... Troubleshooting broken equipment... Keeping me grounded when the days are hard and celebrating with me when they're good.

This week marked our 20th wedding anniversary, and we celebrated it exactly how we wanted to: together, taking Capri and Lana Del Bray to an obstacle clinic and spending the day helping horses learn and grow. It was perfection.

It was also a big week for another reason: Capri turned 5 years old! It feels impossible that our little Prom Queen is already five. Capri was born right here at Red Feather after we rescued her mom, Topanga. Watching her grow up has been one of the greatest privileges of this journey. Where does the time go?!

Capri, Topanga, Lana, and all the others are safe today because of people like you. Your support creates something so much bigger than feed, fencing, or veterinary care. It creates permanence. It creates a safety net. It creates a future.

And that's exactly what we're trying to create for Steve and Sundae, too.

If you haven't checked out Project Steve yet, we'd love for you to take a look and share their story. Consider it an anniversary gift. ❤️

The testosterone results are in, and I’m holding them hostage until we reach 7,500 Steves and Honorary Steves. A hostage situation actually makes complete sense here because Steve could very well be holding his 🥜 hostage too... Is he? Is he not?

Please head over to www.redfeatherfarmnc.org/projectsteve and help us reach 7,500 to find out!

But in all seriousness, underneath the jokes is a very real situation unfolding for both Steve and Sundae.

We spoke with Sundae’s surgical team again today, and next week she heads to New Bolton for a CT scan that will be used to create a custom 3D printed implant for her surgeries. Her procedures alone have been quoted at up to $40,000.

Steve’s future is still unfolding in real time too. Every appointment reveals another layer of just how extensive his orthopedic issues are and how much long-term care he will require.

The reality is that animals like Steve and Sundae are usually discarded when their needs become expensive, inconvenient, or complicated. Someone bred these babies into existence, and then the responsibility for their care fell onto whoever was willing to step in and fight for them.

So that’s what we’re doing.

The campaign goal is huge because the need is huge. This is what trying looks like. This is what it looks like to decide that a life is worth the diagnostics, the surgery, the rehabilitation, the uncertainty, and the effort.

Courtesy posting, because a very special adopter is needed for Hope, and we know our network can help find her person 💗🙏

A couple months ago, Hope showed up as a stray at a friend’s house. And when I say she was thin, I mean starving. Skin and bones.

Over the last two months, she’s slowly gained weight and started to heal. She’s now “underweight” instead of emaciated. Hope has received her first vaccines, is heartworm negative, and will be spayed & microchipped prior to adoption.

Hope is a petite pittie girl (estimated around 45 lbs full grown) and absolutely full of love. She wants nothing more than to be with her people and will happily stay right by your side on or off leash. She would make an incredible hiking, camping, or adventure buddy.

The harder part — and the reason we are being extremely intentional about placement — is that Hope has shown significant fear/aggression toward men. We don’t know what happened in her previous life, but it’s clear something did.

She has met dozens of women and has been nothing but affectionate, goofy, and sweet with every single one. Men, however, are currently a trigger for her.

Right now, we feel the best fit for Hope is a female-only home while she continues to build trust and confidence. (I asked our le***an friends if there was some kind of bat signal we could use to summon them 😂)

In a nutshell, HOPE:
• ~3 year old female pitbull
• Good with other dogs, horses, and cats
• LOVES women
• Velcro dog energy
• Would thrive with someone outdoorsy and active

At this time, we do not think a home with men is the right fit for her, though it’s possible she could continue to progress with training and time.

Please share — the right home for Hope is out there somewhere 💗

The other face behind Project Steve is Sundae.

Well, there are many faces behind this campaign — but little Sundae is one of the horses who urgently needs our help. The full extent of her physical condition wasn’t clear until the day she arrived back in April, and it became obvious almost immediately that her situation was far more serious than we realized.

She was absolutely covered in lice to the point her skin was crawling. She had a ruptured, infected hematoma in her ear that you could smell from several feet away. And most concerning of all were her legs, which are severely misaligned.

After many consultations with veterinary professionals, we were hopeful that regular corrective shoeing could help manage her orthopedic issues. But it has now become clear that Sundae will also require surgical intervention.

To say it plainly: this is her only chance.

Sundae is not even a year old yet, and she is already developing arthritis in her knees. If we do not act now, she will not have the quality of life every young horse deserves.

The surgical team at New Bolton Hospital is prepared to take on Sundae’s case, and they believe that with two separate leg surgeries, we can give her a real future. Unfortunately, the projected cost for these procedures could reach $40,000.

So ahead of us is not a hill, but a mountain.

I don’t yet know how we will make it to the top, but I have faith that the Steves — and the people rallying behind them — can help carry us part of the way there. ❤️
