Caring for animals in this heat, especially livestock, is a labor of passion and love. And maybe a dash of crazy... You're all hot and *hopefully* sweating and uncomfortable. Then there's me, all of the above, and constantly checking vitals and gut sounds.

These guys are all older, and 2 of them have Cushing's disease and struggle with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). They don't shed, they have trouble sweating, and their insulin levels have to be managed to endure they stay sound.

To keep outdoor animals cool and comfortable, ample shade and air movement are the winning tickets.
If your set-up can handle it, always add another fan.

Keeping waters clean, full, and cool is a must. It doesn't matter if you have to dump them 7 times a day, access to fresh water both inside and outside is a necessity. All horses (and goats) have free access to their barn and outside dry-lots.

Claire (32) is enjoying a lunch of cold water soaked grass pellets in front of 2 of her 7 fans inside the barn (each open stall has a fan).

Hank (13) and Regal (25) are enjoying their lunch pellets on their side of the barn in front of a big, industrial fan.

HEADS UP MINNESOTA!
These are just a couple of additional lakes affected by this deadly toxin. It can and has killed dogs in as little as 15 minutes. This stuff is no joke!

Per Carver County Water Management:

County staff suspect blue-green algae blooms on Lakes Bavaria, Eagle, Hydes, Parley, Reitz, Swede, Waconia, and Wasserman.

Though often referred to as algae, blue-green algae are not algae at all, but types of bacteria are called cyanobacteria. These cyanobacteria can produce toxins that cause illness in humans and animals (like pets) if they are inhaled or ingested.

Blue-green algae prefer warm water with temperatures higher than 75°F and calm, sunny weather. The blooms are often blue-green in color but can also be blue, green, reddish-purple, or brown.

There is no way to tell if a blue-green algae bloom has or is producing toxins just by looking at it. It’s best to avoid contact with the water and keep children and pets away, too. The toxins can also persist after the bloom has disappeared, so watch for green scum on the shorelines, which may mean there was a recent bloom.

Staff suspect these blooms are blue-green algae, but the organisms can only be fully identified under a microscope. With a suspected blue-green algae bloom, avoid or minimize recreating in those waters. If you do come in contact, wash with fresh water afterward.

We keep our property clear of debris and the lawn short. We have never and will never treat the property with any type of solution meant to harm native and beneficial plant and insect life. For the last 10 years, we have treated and maintained the property via manual labor and continue to be better than organic.
