Puppy socialization is super important, but thanks to viruses that your puppies can get, people are worried to take their puppies out. We understand, because we tell you not to. However DTVS offers puppy classes in a very clean and safe environment. Please call, ask questions, and even sit in on a class. Shay will help you out and Dr. Estill will approve.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TELL MILD COLIC FROM SEVERE COLIC?

Colic is not a disease, rather it is a symptom or behavior due to pain from the abdomen.

If you think your horse has colic, here is a list of things you should do to help your equine friend:
• Call your veterinarian.
• Remove all food from the horse.
• Water should be left with the horse unless there is excessive drinking.
• Keep the horse in an area where it can be watched.
• Allow the horse to rest or walk the animal if it is continually rolling or in danger of hurting itself.
• Continue observation to look for new symptoms.

Important information your veterinarian may ask for include specific signs of colic and severity; frequency of bowel movements; recent changes in housing, diet, exercise, etc.; medical history and current medical treatments; color and moistness of the gums; heart and respiratory rate; re**al temperature; capillary refill time (normal is 1-2 seconds) and amount of intestinal sounds (if any).

Things to avoid include administering any medications or procedures without first consulting with your veterinarian; passing a stomach tube into the horse's stomach; giving the horse any substance by mouth, particularly liquids; and giving intravenous injections.

The key to minimizing colic remains good management and early detection. For more information on colic and how you can prevent it, consult your horse doctor!

Love your pets!!

Happy Friday!

As a leader in the #veterinary community, the VETGirl team wanted to address the recent concerns about PETS and #COVID19 / #Coronavirus.

We are seeing posts on social media that say DONT PET YOUR CAT OR DOG...

As the story unfolds, of course there is lots of discussion on SARS-COV2 in pets.

At this time there is enough evidence that they can carry it around - most likely in their mouths, less likely on their fur.

At this time there is NO peer reviewed, convincing evidence of animal-to-animal transmission or animal to person transmission.

If you want to be EXTRA careful, refrain from letting pets from other households lick your face... certainly if you know the pet is from a high risk household. (And you shouldnt really be seeing pets from another household with the quarantine recommendations in place...(not counting veterinary professionals who continue to work hard!!!)

But please - do NOT spread false information. Do NOT send your pets to the shelter or euthanize out of fear.

We will get through this TOGETHER!

Dear clients,

With the recent announcement of the Nevada Governor regarding COVID-19, we want to reassure you that we are still open for business and here to help!

As a veterinary hospital, we are highly skilled in handling infectious disease and biosecurity protocols, and have thorough cleaning and disinfecting measures in place. We want to assure you that we are open as usual. We will continue to take precautionary measures to ensure our veterinary team and clients are not at risk.

We recommend taking the following steps to help keep our staff and clients healthy.

•Wash your hands: Please remember to wash your hands/sanitize before, during, and after your visit.

• Social Distancing: Please maintain a distance of 6 feet whenever possible. While we treat our clients and staff like family, in the current situation, we ask that we limit hugs and handshakes for the time being.

• Large groups: We ask that you do not bring more people than necessary with you to your appointment. Our staff is highly qualified to help you handle your animals, so please do not worry about having extra hands around to help.

•Drop off appointments are available to allow examination of your pet without waiting in the building. If your pet is in need of veterinary care and you are unwell, we encourage you to call our clinic and arrange for concierge service from your vehicle. 775-623-9133.

•Checking in and out: To reduce build up in the waiting area, we ask that we do not have extra visitors up front or for extended periods of time. We will do our best to get you the information/medications/dishcharges necessary in a timely fashion, to reduce the amount of wait time, and may ask you to wait in your vehicle to reduce unnecessary exposure.

We will continue to provide care for both large and small animals during this time, and take the health of our patients and clients most seriously.

Sincerely,

DTVS

🐕 Tip Tuesday 🐈
Animal Obesity.. yes it’s a thing..

Did you know you may be literally killing your pet with kindness? That's right, those daily treats you give your pet may give the illusion that all is well, but the reality is that the extra treats, extra food and the resulting extra weight are causing lasting damage to your pet’s internal organs, bones, and joints -- some of which can never be remedied even with a change in diet and exercise.

So, finding the best food, doing the proper calorie count, knowing what your Dog, cat, or any other animal/pet’s proper weight is is imperative.

Set an appointment, give us a call and we can help you and your fur loved one maintain its appropriate body weight!

🐕Tip Tuesday🐴
Although fleas and ticks pose a threat to pets year-round, here in the state of Nevada they become most active during the warmer months- starting as early as March.
As a responsible pet owner, it’s necessary to prevent your pets from being affected by these parasites. Ticks transmit not only Lyme disease, but also other illnesses like babesiosis, ehrlichiosis (a bacterial infection), and even tick paralysis. There are more than 200 species of fleas affecting dogs, and cats, horses, and these can also transmit disease, not to mention lead to a costly and time-consuming extermination process if your home becomes infested. The best defense is to keep your pet on a year-round flea and tick preventive medication as recommended by your Local veterinarian.

Happy Tuesday all!!
