🦟 West Nile Virus Detected in Nevada Horses – Protect Yours! 🐴
This summer, two Nevada horses (Clark & Nye Counties) tested positive for West Nile Virus and were euthanized. While we haven’t seen confirmed cases yet in Northern Nevada, the mosquitoes don’t care about county lines — so prevention is key.
What is West Nile Virus?
A mosquito-borne disease that affects horses, humans, and birds. Horses and humans can get sick but don’t spread it further.
Signs in Horses:
• Fever
• Weakness or stumbling, especially hind legs
• Muscle twitching, seizures, trouble rising
• Drooping lips, head, or odd chewing/lip smacking
• Sensitivity to sound/touch
Why Worry?
⚠️ Horses that show signs have a 30–40% fatality rate. There’s no specific cure — only supportive care.
Prevention:
✅ Vaccinate annually (AAEP core vaccine) – sometimes spring + fall boosters recommended in long mosquito seasons
✅ Reduce mosquito exposure – dump standing water, stable at dawn/dusk, use safe repellents
