We are getting really close to getting the certificate of occupancy and going before the NC Vet board to reopen the building. It could be in the next week or two. Meanwhile, the cost SO FAR is $459,000 with at least another $100,000 still left to go. We had been kicking the can down the road on a lot of things over the years that had to get fixed. We needed a new roof from the last hurricane. We doubled the size of the parking lot to accommodate double the customers we serve now. We needed all new siding, electric, AC and plumbing systems, a $25,000 lift to lift all the trapped cats, $100,000 worth of ADA ramps and decks since we are now 7 feet up in the air and a $75,000 concrete foundation to sit on. An unnamed tropical storm flooded us with 3 feet of water, but we evacuated 100 animals by boat to safety. For ten months we operated out of mobile units, storage containers and tents in our parking lot on generators and a T pole through rain, snow, and the hottest days of a heat wave. Only closing for 3 weeks, we proved that this team is not only operating on a mission. We started a movement. A movement where everyday people, shelters and rescues drive from 2 hours away or more from every direction to get animals fixed. 4 days every week, over 100 animals get bussed each day into the largest nonprofit spay/neuter clinic in all of Southeastern NC because people are choosing A DIFFERENT PATH. They reject dropping off homeless animals at county pounds for them to kill. That way is long gone and you can thank Adopt An Angel for creating Fix A Friend that started this movement. We have TWO mobile spay/neuter clinics now so expect great things coming from us soon! WATCH THIS SPACE.
