Bringing home two puppies from the same litter might seem like a great idea—they’ll have built-in companionship, right? However, many dog owners are unaware of the challenges that come with Littermate Syndrome, a behavioral condition that can develop when sibling puppies are raised together.

What is Littermate Syndrome?

Littermate Syndrome is a set of behavioral issues that arise when two puppies from the same litter (or even unrelated puppies of the same age) are raised together. These issues often stem from excessive bonding between the puppies, making it difficult for them to develop independence and proper social skills.

Signs of Littermate Syndrome:

April 3, 1899 is considered the birthday of the German Shepherd Dog breed. On this day Max von Stephanitz bought a male dog, named Hektor Linksrhein, at one of the first dog shows.
The dog's name was later changed to Horand von Grafrath. Horand was to become the very first registered GSD in history and the "father of the breed". Max von Stephanitz has organized the breed club and implemented the breed registry. The breed quickly gained popularity to this day remains one of the most loved breeds in the world.

A friend is suffering because someone who purchased animals from them, breached the contract and sold them. This is the worst nightmare for breeders of any animal - dog or horse! This is why there is a large monetary penalty in my contracts. To protect my puppies. I want them back if the owner cant keep them for some reason, or decides to sell them for some reason. To disregard the contractual or verbal agreement to give the breeder the first chance to get the animal back, is unacceptable.

*If you purchase an animal from reputable breeder, expect them to stand by their contracts and genuinely care about what happens to their animals throughout their entire life. Be the person that just calls to let them know things are going well and life is uneventful, or if it isn’t working out FOR ANY REASON. If you are selling an animal, why wouldn’t you want them to have the option to go back home? Are you selling because you need the money? Ok, there is a sure fire option to try to make that sale. You know at least one person that might be willing to buy them back. Money in your hand, animal goes home. Done. Not working out personality wise? You know they’ll be safe back with their breeder and then you have helped the animal move on and opened space in your home to find the right match. If the breeder exercises their first right of refusal and decides they are not going to purchase the animal back, just update them with the new owner’s info and pass their info to the new owner’s so they have access to the lifetime of support you enjoyed. It’s literally that simple.*
One thing has become crystal clear as the years have gone by in my life: contracts are going to have to start spelling out financial and legal penalties for breech of contract because no one should have to be desperately searching for their animals then just have to sit back and have no recourse. The lack of decency has become overwhelming. If the animal moved into a good home, what’s the problem with just sending an update? Everyone gets on a soapbox about how we should only purchase from reputable breeders and then gets their knickers in a twist when those reputable breeders are doing reputable breeder things like making sure their animals are still alive, safe, and doing well. Then will turn around and get upset when other breeders won’t sell to them. Well, why would they if they have to try to sleep at night with worse case scenarios running through their minds about animals they can’t find?
I can tell you for sure that I will facetime, video call, and send pics at the drop of hat. Do you want to come visit? Just show up. I would be so excited to proudly show off what we have learned, what we have accomplished, or that they are living their best life. Anytime. Day or night. It’s that simple.
