Some events are so momentous that putting them into words is difficult. For the past 20 years we all watched the continual animal neglect on a local farm. The last of those horses (seen in the video) stepped onto a trailer and toward a new life. There is still work to be done to change the state laws to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Although our part was very small, the removal of all the horses was done through the efforts of many rescues and law enforcement agencies under the direction of the Suffolk Police Department. We regret that law enforcement and animal control have taken so much criticism over this, as they have to follow the laws they swore to uphold. Placing almost 60 horses is not easy, as most rescues operate at capacity. Finding rescues that can handle horses that are almost completely feral is almost impossible, but it was done. We all need to celebrate that fact that the horses are all in a better place and the nightmare of seeing neglected horses on those properties is over. The horses are now with rescues and new homes that can care for them and ensure they are given a fresh start.
Maura carries the last foal from that farm that will ever be born. Like the other foals that were born after their dams were removed, her foal will never know hunger or neglect. Thank you to all of our supporters that donated, volunteered, and offered encouragement toward her care as well as the others. We appreciate every single one of you. You are the reason we are able to do what we do best!
This video is from the day we went out to meet with the owner after talking with her the previous week about taking some of the horses. She was messaged that day through a third party and never responded.
