Monday's with Dr. Magnuson!

Read below for a beautiful story between Bird and his Mom.

Meet “Bird”, an African Grey parrot owned by an elderly woman named Charlotte. Charlotte’s daughter brought Bird in for a check up and shared with me such a beautiful story. Charlotte had to be hospitalized and was out of the house for 100 days. During that time her daughter and others cared for Bird in Charlotte’s absence. Charlotte returned home and on the day after her return, Bird saw his mom, and said “Charlotte, are you okay?” ❤️they may know more than we think they know❤️

We had a patient in who had multiple foreign body objects removed by endoscopy with Dr. Buckley.

All of the team was intrigued and excited to see if we could successfully remove the foreign body objects and prevent the pet from having to go to surgery to remove them.

We were successful and the pet went home a few hours later! The dog had a slight sore throat and was on soft food for a few days, but otherwise no long-term complications or extended recovery period.

Happy New Year from all of us (and Max!)

Happy happy happy New Year! One of my favorite dachshunds, Max, had his follow up visit from his dental surgery a few weeks back. He is doing very well and his smile shows! Max is happy at the vet 100% of the time. His presence and happiness is infectious. His mom says he is the same way at home. Why are dogs so flippin’ happy ALL.THE.TIME??? Well… they live in the moment. They have mastered being in the here and now and really finding joy in about every situation. This is one of the most important lessons we can learn from our animal friends…being present. Put down your phone, what are you doing right now? Can you quiet your mind of all the hustle and bustle of your day and really enjoy this very minute? Maybe you are sitting in your car waiting for your kids to come out of dance practice, are you enjoying the solitude and peace? Maybe you are at home and procrastinating doing the dishes, are you enjoying the moment? Go dog-wild and be in the moment. Be as happy as Max and just be. More joy will come your way when you just get present and allow it to happen.

Happy New Year from our family to yours! We look forward to seeing you all in 2023! 🥳

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Merry Christmas from Douglas. A 10-year-old cat who has lost both of his eyes and all of his teeth. He was a rescue cat that found his way to MSPCA-Angell in Methuen MA where his owner volunteers and straight into her heart. Though he cannot see he gets around her and his house like he can! Blind pets teach us that if one of our senses is gone, we still have many others to use. They also teach us, like all pets do, to celebrate life for all that it is, and we are all receiving blessings from the universe all the time, if we are open to receiving. 🎄❤️☮️🕎

Rare tapeworm found in New Hampshire moose hunters

As veterinarians we are also responsible for educating the public on diseases which you can contract from animals. Two moose hunters were diagnosed with Echinococcus, a very uncommon tape worm seen in people. This worm is typically spread from f***s of a dog or a cat that has ingested raw infected wildlife meat.

This is the reason we recommend checking stool samples on pets twice yearly. This is to catch any intestinal parasites that may be detrimental to your pet and you. Routine screening will help diagnose parasites before the put your pet and you at risk.

A rare tapeworm that had never been found in a person in New Hampshire has now been found in two moose hunters.

Monday's with Dr. Magnuson!

Check out this pet frog and all the awesome information about her!

Yes, it's a pet frog. An African Pixie Frog (African bullfrog) to be more exact. She weighs 369 grams, that’s about 3/4 of a pound or 3 sticks of butter! She is solid! Males can grow to over two pounds in size! They are native to South Africa, and they spend most of their time buried underground in a state of reduced activity called torpor for most of the year and come to the surface during heavy rainfall to feed and mate. They eat mostly meat material like insects, worms, small mice, or small lizards and small snakes in the wild. They will also eat some plant material. Most herpetologists (those who study reptiles and amphibians) say they will eat most anything. They are not poisonous, but they can be aggressive so be careful handling them as they can jump right at you, which can be startling. If handled from a young age, they can be sociable. Since they are relatively inactive, they can be good beginner pets if you get the environment and diet correct. They need high humidity and enough substrate to burrow and hide. Checking in with you all as I have admittedly been slacking on posting content lately. The past few weeks I have been very busy with work and developing some fun upcoming projects! For those of you who may not know, I am a full time professional animal trainer and small business owner, primarily working with canines. I absolutely love what I do, and EDCTE is an extension of that. The rats have been getting plenty of love of course, I just haven’t been diligent about getting videos for you all. I promise to get some more posts up this next week! Here’s a cute picture of Loki coming home from the vet today to put a little squish in your newsfeed. I am so grateful to live in such close proximity to an amazing exotic vet (Shoutout to Canobie Lake Veterinary Hospital, LLC)! They took excellent care of him today. 💕

You guys, Pav and I had a fantastic check up today at the vet! It’s so wonderful to be able to say that, and I am so proud of him and all the amazing choices he made today! We put all of our husbandry training to good use and Pav was truly remarkable! This is a dog who a few years ago when he first came to live with me was a bucking bronco/ball of extreme anxiety for even the simplest exam. Today, Pav CHOSE to participate in each piece of his wellness exam and vaccinations. We utilized a muzzle while Dr. Dressel examined his ears/eyes which allowed me to be a bit less restrictive with physical restraints without compromising safety. Pav knows his muzzle means cool stuff is about to happen, so he wasn’t worried about it at all. The overall theme during any of our husbandry training sessions or vet visits is consent, and giving your dog the power to make choices. You might just be surprised what a difference the power of choice makes for a dog who might be a little worried about being handled for vet visits/grooming . If vet/grooming visits are challenging for you and your dog, please reach out, I’m here to help!

A big shoutout to Dr. Dressel and Carrie at Canobie Lake Veterinary Hospital, LLC for your patience and understanding today, we appreciate you!
