What happens after we collect a blood sample from your pet? The type of tube we use depends on the type of test the veterinarian orders! The red top (or "tiger top") tube that Katelyn is holding, allows us to spin the vial in the centrifuge. The blood is separated within the tube, into red blood cells and serum. The laboratory can then use the serum to assess organ function. A purple top indicates that there is an anti-coagulant in the vial, so the blood stays in a liquid state. This allows the laboratory to count red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets: assessing bone marrow function and hydration status!
