The History of Pet Registration

Did you know that pet registration didn’t just start as a way to keep track of our furry friends. It actually began with a law to protect public health!

In Texas, state law requires all dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies. This is to prevent the spread of this deadly disease to both animals and humans.

To ensure compliance, cities and counties began requiring pet registration. This serves as a way to confirm that pets are vaccinated and it also helps return lost animals to their owners.

Not only is pet registration a legal requirement in our City Code Ordinances, but it is also part of being a responsible pet owner. It keeps your pet safe, helps animal control reunite lost pets with families, and ensures community health.

If your pet isn’t registered yet, now’s the time! Come down to City Hall and an Animal Control Officer can assist you with this. Pet registrations are $25 each pet. The fee is reduced if your pet is sterilized or microchipped and can be waived if they are both.

If you cannot make it to City Hall, you can fill out this form online at https://www.windcrest-tx.gov/FormCenter/Police-7/Pet-Registration-Request-Form-60 and an Animal Control Officer will be in contact with you.

If you see a dog you like and are on the fence about adopting, ask our ACO about fostering. Fostering is a great way to see how the dog does in your home and how they get along with your kids or other pets. Fostering also gives these adorable pups a chance to get out of the kennel and interact with other people and animals.

As the Fourth of July rapidly approaches, just a friendly reminder that it is a violation of Windcrest City Ordinance to set off fireworks within the city limits. Setting off fireworks can pose an immediate hazard to pets and homes.
