The sugar glider is a small, omnivorous, arboreal, and nocturnal gliding possum belonging to the marsupial infraclass. The common name refers to its preference for sugary foods like sap and nector and its ability to glide through the air much like a flying squirrel.

Hello Everyone,
I understand this group is tiny. I reject 30-60 requests every day to join this group. I do not condone selling on this page. I can not vouch for the people selling sugar gliders. So, I want no part of it.

I would like to introduce myself, I am a licensed practicing zoologist. I have a doctorate in Animal Science. I am NOT a back yard breeder. I have a breeding facility that has 100 tri-breeding (one male, two females) colonies. I also have a colony at my home which has 64 sugar gliders in one cage.

I also breed lemurs, red tail foxes, raccoons, three-toed sloths, and spider monkeys. I own a black Howler monkey as a personal pet.
I have this page to answer questions and share what and how I care for my animals. I am not a veterinarian, I like healthy animals, not sick ones.

Feel free to ask any questions; I love to educate people about the world of animals.

If you want to know the truth about an animal, you can call any zoo in America and ask to speak to the zoologist in charge of the animal you want to know about.

Is it OK to only have one sugar glider?

A: A single sugar glider in a cage is a miserable creature, and he may get so depressed he dies. While you can buy a single sugar glider from us, we do highly recommend that you buy two or more if you don't already have one at home. Sugar gliders are very social animals and indeed thrive when they have another glider with them. Sugar gliders will not die from ACTUAL loneliness. A lonely sugar glider deprived of social interaction WILL NOT thrive. They will become depressed and lonely, which can cause them to die. Lonely sugar gliders will become untamable and start to self-mutate themselves. A lonely sugar glider may not bond with you until he has a mate. Sugar gliders will chew off their tails, which will not grow back. They will start to chew off their fingers; then, they will eventually die. It's no joke; they need the companion of a mate. They sleep in a tight ball, hugging each other. I like to call them spooners.

Having just one sugar glider is like putting a four-year-old child in solitary confinement. Will the child survive? Yes, but the child won't be very sane after a short time. It isn't kind to the glider. Uneducated glider owners have told me that they spend all their time with their gliders, so they aren't lonely. Not true; you can not replace another sugar glider. You can't snuggle as another glider can. If you believe you can, maybe you should reconsider owning gliders.

Owning just 1 Sugar Glider
One of the best toys for a sugar glider is another sugar glider. Two or more gliders will race around their cage in tag games, hide-and-seek, and follow the leader. They will spend a lot of time in cooperative play and then snuggle together in their nest for a nap. They will groom each other, "talk" to each other, and keep each other occupied whenever you aren't available to interact with them. Their need for company is as comprehensive as their need for food.

FRIENDS
So, in the end, if you own just one sugar glider, you are a repulsive human being. If this article doesn't change your mind about having just one, maybe you should reconsider being a sugar glider owner. - Dacis Stutterhiem DVM

Let's talk about having just one glider.

A lone glider can suffer stress which can lead to depression, sickness and possible self-mutilation. Often times, I have been contacted by an owner who was sold just one sugar glider by an uncaring source. The animal refuses to bond with them, mostly because the sugar gliders feel safer in numbers. Once they get a new friend, it turns from night to day in the bonding process and now the little baby wants to interact with the owner. Having just one glider is like putting a 4 year old child in solitary confinement, will they survive, yes. Will they be sane, no. You as a person can not replace another glider. They sleep together wrapped up in a ball together. A human can not replace what another glider can do for each other.

Let's talk about Albinos.
There are some breeders who breed Albinos exclusively. My advice is to stay away from those breeders and their gliders. Albinism is a congenital disorder characterizied in animals by a complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. Mainly albinism occurs with vision problems, which many include: strabismus (crossed eyes) photophobia (sensitivity to light) nystagmus (involuntary rapid eye movements). Most if not all Albinos have a deafness syndrome, a condition characterized by congenital neural deafness and severe or extreme piebald-like phenotype with extensive areas of hypopigmentation. Albinos are born with a faulty gene which makes them very substantial to illnesses.
In my opinion, why purchase an animal from a breeder like this, and make a market for sub-standard sugar gliders. Why encourage people to keep breeding these gliders? If people could only see the facts of these little creatures, we could put an end to Albinism in gliders forever.

Today I want to talk about the price of a Sugar Glider.
Sugar Gliders should be sold for no more then $200. each. People who sell them for more are nothing but someone trying to make an income off of them. As a breeder I know the actual value of a glider.
Just because you got "suckered" into buying an over price glider doesn't give your baby joeys any extra value. Yes, pet stores sell them for $400. to $800. each, but that is expected, they have an overhead. As a hobbyist, selling gliders regardless of color, for anything over $200. is a 'shame on you".

Food: What to feed a Sugar Glider. Many people believe many things and have read so many stories on the internet. Everything from cooked eggs, cooked chicken, cat food to frozen ice cubes filled with a variety of things. Are they wrong? Sugar gliders will eat just about anything while they are in a cage being served food. Is it healthy for them, NO. Cooked food takes out all the nutrition out of it. (They don't have chefs cooking in the wild for them.) Sugar gliders live in the tops of trees. In the wild they NEVER walk the ground, so anything grown on the ground is a no no. Sugar gliders in the wild eat insects, baby birds, RAW eggs and sap from the branches.

So you should feed insectivore, raw tree bearing fruit and pure maple syrup. Maybe a live finch once or twice a month.

Insectivore: milled insects best brand is Mazuri, they supply 80% of American zoo's with food for wild animals.

Raw tree bearing fruit: If it doesn't grown in a tree, stay away from it. Remember they are canopy creatures.

Pure Maple Syrup: In the wild they tear open branches to eat the sap for nutrients and minerals. Pure maple syrup is just that, tree sap. hey get calcium and other minerals they need to live a healthy life.

A live finch: this is the best food you can give a glider as a treat. The nutrients they get from a live bird is enormous. It can't be reproduced. In the wild when they raid a nest in the middle of the night, they eat the baby birds and eggs. If the adult bird is still there they gang up on it and eat the bird. Note: Parakeets are fighter and will scar your gliders.

Sugar gliders never eat ice or ever come in contact with ice, don't freeze their food. Just because a glider eats it, doesn't mean its good for them. You have them caged up, if they could chose their food, they wouldn't pick a Popsicle.

any questions please leave in the comments below.

Everyday I will share FACTS about Sugar Gliders. Today I will talk about water bonding gliders.
Water bonding is done by getting them totally soaked from the neck down. Sometimes if I'm bonding older ones after soaking them I'll dip them in lemon extract water. Then they are put in the cage together. 2 things happen at this point. First they go into self preservation mode. They start to immediately grooming themselves.
One thing you have to understand about gliders. They p*e on each other, this is how they get their colony's scent. Everyone smells like everyone and it's a very distinctive smell. This smell can't be reproduced. Once they are done grooming themselves, they will seek out others that smell like them.
After they all are dry, the first thing to give them is some watermelon, fairly large piece. Let them fill up on it, they will go rest. The watermelon will goes right thru them. This is why you don't feed it to them, no nutritional value to them and they all p*e on each other.
If everyone smells the same, they will all bond together.
Mission accomplished.
