Food refusal with dumbbell retrieves. These were consecutive repetitions. I clipped the video to make it bearable. It was clear to me that by the last repetition she understood the task and had confidence that she was making the right decision.

If you have questions about this video send me a message, I can’t explain everything in a post. Believe it or not, dog training and social media aren’t best friends and it’s hard to explain and understand concepts here.

If the picture changes, Raven’s confidence gets shaky. She’s physically capable of running right through all of this stuff around the dumbbell, and more importantly, she wants to pick it up. However, because the picture has more resistance, she struggles. Sometimes, she will even go into avoidance, which can be the case with real birds in the field.

This year one of my goals for Raven is to proof our training and to truly read Raven and try to decipher how she is feeling about the activity so that I can proof not just to improve these party tricks, but to empower her. In a class recently at The Right Paw, Jen put a bunch of food down next to the dumbbell and Raven’s brain exploded, so we’ve been working on that distraction as well, tough one!

Some say dogs mirror their owners. I have all the drive in the world too, but when my expectations are forced to change because of something out of my control, I sometimes give up too. Let’s work together kiddo.

A few photos from walks, hikes, classes and activities this fall. I’m terrible at ‘dogumenting’ everything. My walking schedule is full but we are always taking 1/1 training clients for dog training. [email protected]

Anyone else rushing through the day to get home and squeeze in a quick train so your own dogs aren’t the cobblers kids with no shoes? Just me?

I have videos of puppy Raven that I don’t remember recording. Raven is a retriever, I didn’t have to teach her to want to go out there and get the thing. There’s something magical about training a dog who naturally doesn’t exhibit drive to want to hold the thing in their mouth. But, there’s also something special about watching a puppy tap into their genetics with zero additional information.

“My retriever is broken,” is a common trope. It’s easy to squash drive but luckily, dogs are usually forgiving and it takes just a touch of effort to light the match again. Notice how little I’m talking or trying to interact with Raven in this clip. I’m allowing her to have fun, playing with 2 balls so I don’t have to be reaching toward her mouth and I’m providing a safe spot for her to land - something I learned from a TWC video years ago. Go get chase and catch 2.0 if you haven’t already.

Too often, we focus on the hold and the out before letting the puppy enjoy retrieving. This is natural! As humans, the fun part for us is throwing the ball and watching our dog have a great time. We are anxious to repeat this sequence yet slow to understand that holding and outing are behaviors we need to teach much later than 8 weeks old.

Raven at clinic and practice.

⭐️Goal Of The Day⭐️

This 20 min session with Raven has a specific goal. I’m teaching a throwing clinic and would like to haven Raven out with me in her hut while I’m teaching.

In order to do this successfully, Raven needs to be calm inside her hut, so the goal is to practice being in command (kennel) while I’m practicing on my own.

As a consequence, we got to practice obedience beforehand and distance throws plus greedy practice in between. 1.5 minutes of a 20 min session.

I will likely do this 2x before the clinic with my solo practice throws being longer in between. On the day I’m teaching, we will do the exact same thing we practiced.
