Come out for live racing at Delaware Park on Opening Day, Wednesday, May 26th. First race is 1:15pm. As always FREE parking and admission.

Per the Governor’s recent order, Delaware Park's COVID protocols have changed;
• Any individual who has been fully vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus is no longer required to wear a mask or facial covering indoors.
• Per the CDC and DE Department of Health guidelines, individuals who have not been fully vaccinated are asked to continue wearing a mask at all times, except for when they are actively eating and drinking.
• We are no longer under any capacity or social distancing restrictions.

1960 Delaware Handicap winner Quill.

This is an original 1960 photo of Quill with Bobby Ussery after winning the Delaware Handicap. She was owned and bred by Reginald N. Webster and was trained by Lucien Laurin and the man holding her in the winner’s circle is Eddie Sweat who would later be the groom for Secretariat and Riva Ridge.

Quill was by Princequillo out of Quick Touch by Count Fleet. She was a half sister to: Count Amber, Sorceress and Capelet.

At two in 1958, she won: the Matron defeating Rich Tradition; the Gardenia over Resaca. Quill finished third to Rich Tradition in both the Spinaway and the Schuylerville.

She was named the 1958 Champion Two Year Old Filly.

At three in 1959, Quill won: the Acorn and the Mother Goose. She finished second to Resaca in the Coaching Club American Oaks.

At four in 1960, she won the Delaware Handicap over Royal Native and the New Castle Stakes over Tempted. Quill finished second: to Tempted in the Diana Handicap and to Royal Native in both the Molly Pitcher Handicap and the Top Flight Handicap but was ahead of Bug Brush in the latter race.

At stud her best were:

Caucasus: won stakes in both Ireland and the United States.

First Feather: dam of Run the Gantlet 1971 Champion Grass Horse. He in turn was the sire of Champions: April Run, Ardross, Swiftfoot and Comanche Run and many others. She was also the dam of Head of the River, Lightning Leap and Spring is Here.

Euryanthe: dam of Stakes winner Eastern Dawn who is turn was the dam of Hero’s Tribute. She was also the dam of Air Distingue who was the dam of several stakes winners: Vettori, Chivalric and Stage Manner.

One For All: 1970 Canadian Champion Turf Horse.

Shill: unraced but the dam of Japanese Champion Maruzensky.

Twill: dam of Desert Lass who was the dam of multiple stakes winner Sumptious.

A new face, but familiar name will be stabled at Delaware Park this year.

Gary Contessa, who last year said he “had enough” of training horses and announced his retirement after 35 years, officially comes out of retirement Friday when he starts Trustyourinstinct in Aqueduct's eighth race, a $40,000 claimer for New York-breds at six furlongs.
