Okay so the fur is EVERYWHERE again and I was fully ready to be annoyed about it until I actually looked into why dogs shed in the fall.

Turns out it's kind of the opposite of what I assumed. The hair coming out now is the summer coat leaving, and the real thing happening is your dog is literally building their winter coat from scratch right now. It's triggered by the days getting shorter, not the cold.

And here's the bit that made me actually do something about it: the quality of that winter coat, how thick and warm and insulating it ends up being, is basically decided now while it's growing in. Feed them well now, the coat comes in full and does its job all winter. Wait until it's cold and it's already too late, the coat's already grown.

So instead of just cursing the vacuum, I started actually supporting the coat while it's being built. Brushing deeper to clear the old stuff, and adding an omega oil so the new coat grows in from a good base.

If you've adopted a rescue, you probably clocked the coat before anything else. That dry, dull, kind of rough fur that quietly tells you this dog had a rough go before they got to you.

Something I really wish I'd known going in: a few weeks after you bring them home, right when things are finally going well, a lot of rescues suddenly shed like crazy. Handfuls of it, sometimes thin patches. It's terrifying. You think you've done something wrong.

Turns out it's often the opposite. When they finally feel safe and all that stress starts to lift, the hair cycle that was basically frozen by stress hormones wakes back up, and it shoves all the old worn-out hair out at once to grow the healthy coat. The scary shed is actually them getting better. (Still get a vet check to rule out fleas and mange, since those are common too.)

The coat ends up being this little progress bar for the whole recovery. Good food, the fatty acids their body's been starved of, a calm home, and time. Watching the shine come back is honestly one of the best parts of adopting.

Spent months brushing my dog like a maniac trying to get his coat to look less… blah. Nothing worked. Turns out I was cleaning the wrong end of the problem.

Went digging and here's the thing nobody tells you: most dry food is cooked at crazy high heat, and the omega-3s that a healthy coat actually needs are super fragile. They basically get wrecked by that heat. So even when the bag proudly says "with omega-3," a lot of it is degraded before your dog ever eats it. And the little bit that survives keeps breaking down in the bag every time you open it and let air in.

On top of that, a lot of kibble is way heavy on omega-6 and light on omega-3, and that imbalance itself can show up as a dull, flat coat.

The fix was almost annoyingly simple. Didn't even change his food. Just started adding a proper omega-3 oil straight to his bowl to put back what the processing strips out. No more shampoo rabbit holes.

Okay, new puppy people, this one surprised me so I'm passing it on.

We all know the puppy stage is chaos, chewed everything, zero sleep, you know the drill. So it's easy to just white-knuckle through it. But apparently under all that, their whole body is being built in a window that literally never comes back.

The bit that got me: by six weeks a puppy's brain is already about 70% developed, and DHA (an omega-3) is one of the main things it's built from. There are actual studies where puppies given good DHA levels learned and trained better than the ones that got less. So the omega-3 isn't just for a shiny coat, it's helping build the brain, during the one time that happens.

BUT, and this is important, you can absolutely over-do supplements with puppies and cause harm, especially big breeds while their joints are forming. So this is very much a "talk to your vet, start low, don't go crazy" thing, not a dump-it-in thing.

Had a small gut-punch moment with my old boy the other day. Was petting him like I have a thousand times and just… noticed his coat doesn't feel like it used to. Drier. Kind of coarse. He's greying around the muzzle and I guess I'd been pretending not to see it.

Went down a rabbit hole and it turns out it's textbook aging. The oil glands that keep the coat glossy slow right down, the skin gets thinner, the whole thing renews slower. Totally normal. But here's the part I didn't know: that dull coat isn't just a looks thing, it means the skin is more fragile and needs more support than it used to, not less.

The thing that helps most is omega-3, and the bit that got me is the same stuff that helps the coat also supports the achy old joints and the brain. So it's not really about a shiny coat, it's about keeping them comfortable for the time we've got.

Genuine question for the group: how is it possible to bathe a dog, have them smell amazing for exactly one day, and then two days later they're back to smelling like a corn chip that gave up on life?

I went through this for way too long. Bathed him more. Smelled worse. Turns out that was exactly the wrong move.

The smell isn't dirt. It's yeast and bacteria on the skin doing their thing, and they go into overdrive when the skin's oil balance is off, which is exactly what happens when you over-bathe and strip all the natural oils. So the harder I scrubbed, the more I was feeding the problem. Cool. Great. Love that for me.

Two things that actually helped: drying him properly all the way down to the skin (not just the top coat), and backing off the baths instead of ramping them up. Plus supporting the skin itself so the whole surface stays balanced between washes.

Okay, mini PSA because I wish someone had told me this two supplements ago.

If you've ever put your dog on a skin and coat oil, watched nothing happen for a month, and quietly gave up… you might have quit right before the good part.

Turns out a dog's skin runs on about a 21 day renewal cycle, and the coat takes even longer than that to show anything. So that whole first month where it looks like you're wasting your money? The work is actually happening down in the skin where you literally cannot see it yet. The visible stuff is weeks behind.

I only figured this out after writing off two products that probably would've worked if I'd just kept going and, honestly, if I'd given it every single day instead of whenever I remembered.

🐾 Golden or Lab?
