Meet Chewlius Caesar (Chewy), the northern caiman lizard! Caiman lizards (comprising two species) are part of the Teiid (whiptail lizard) created kind. This created kind contains around 150 species, including tegus and whiptails. Northern caiman lizards are known for their brilliant red and green colors. They are excellent swimmers and climbers, so you may see Chewy swimming in his water feature or out basking on a log!

They have a powerful whiplike tail and a strong bite, which are their main forms of defense. In the wild, they are specialized snail-eaters and are able to crush and spit out shells with their powerful molars. In our fallen world (Genesis 3), we know that animals like the northern caiman lizard eat other animals and defend themselves from predators, but we look forward to the day when creation will be restored (Isaiah 11).

It’s International Owl Awareness Day! Owls are incredibly important members of our ecosystems, controlling rodents and other pests in our fallen world (Genesis 3). Some simple ways we can care for owls include avoiding rodenticides, preserving habitats with mature trees, and supporting wildlife rehabilitation centers that save sick and injured native birds.

"Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast..." — Proverbs 12:10a

If you want to meet some of our birds of prey, including one of our owls, check out the link to our Bird of Prey Behind the Scenes Experience in the comments. A portion of each ticket sold goes to Grit and Grace Wildlife Rehab as they work to rehabilitate native Kentucky wildlife.

African crested porcupines eat a wide range of plants—from roots and tubers to bark, fruit, and other vegetation—throughout their native range in parts of Africa and the Mediterranean. Here at the zoo, our porcupines receive a nutritionally and behaviorally complete diet formulated by our Animal Health team. This diet is designed to mimic what African crested porcupines forage for in their natural habitat. Thomas (along with parents, Gideon and Atarah) receives food items like sweet potato, jicama, and corn on the cob in addition to leafy greens and browse. Porcupines will also chew on antlers and bones to care for their teeth and ingest calcium for quill health! Our keepers present these foods in ways that encourage the species' natural foraging behaviors.
