This Mimi, a 14-year-old Siberian kitty. Siberian cats, formally Siberian Forest Cat, developed over thousands of years as forest cats in their native home of Russia. A fully grown Siberian can weigh as much as 17 to 25 pounds. Siberians are often called hypoallergenic because they produce less Fel d 1, that's the strongest among the eight known Fel d 1 allergens produced in cat saliva, which is deposited on their fur when they groom themselves, compared to other cats.

This is R***r Rue, an Australian shepherd, and he's all ready for his bath! Did you know that the ASPCA recommends bathing your dog only once every three months? Some dogs who spend a lot of time outside or those with skin problems may require more frequent baths. Dogs with loose facial skin or wrinkles may need special attention. To prevent dirt and bacteria from causing irritation and infection, clean the folds with damp cotton and thoroughly dry the areas between the folds.

This is Toefu, a 3-month-old kitten who has lots of extra toes! This trait in cats is called polydactyl, and many of our regular clients will fondly recall our office kitty Benny with his giant oven mitts for front paws. Toefu has 6 toes on his front feet and 5 toes on his back feet, making for some really big feet! The norm for a cat is 5 on the front and 4 on the back. According to Wikipedia, polydactyly is a congenital abnormality that can be inherited. Some cases of polydactyly are caused by mutations in a genetic enhancer that regulates expression of the sonic hedgehog (SHH) gene in the limb. (Sonic hedgehog!? Who knew!?) Both Jake, a Canadian polydactyl cat, and Paws, an American polydactyl cat, were recognized by Guinness World Records for having the highest number of toes on a cat, 28. Various combinations of anywhere from four to seven toes per paw are common. It is rare for a cat to have polydactyl hind paws only, and polydactyly of all four paws is even less common.

This is Roy, a 10-month-old gray tabby, and he's enjoying the dog days of summer! Do you know the difference between a tabby and a tiger cat? The signature "M" on the forehead is a sure sign your cat's a tabby, but it's all in the stripes. A tabby has distinct stripes, swirls and spots, where a tiger has narrow, vertical stripes. So, all tiger cats are tabby cats, but not all tabby cats are tiger cats.

P.S. Don't forget to protect your pets with flea and tick prevention!

The Williamson Animal Hospital would like to welcome our new licensed vet tech Sierra Brown.

Sierra has been interning/working with us since last summer, but this past May she graduated from SUNY Canton among the top of her class with an Associates in Applied Sciences, Veterinary Technology. She went on to pass her state exam to become licensed just a few weeks later!

We are so glad to have Sierra working with us as she continues her schooling journey to become a veterinarian. She has shown us that she is patient, kind and caring and takes pride in the care she gives to our furry patients.

Welcome CeCe!!
