It's foaling season in our area. An important reminder is fescue toxicity. It is important to remove you pregnant mare from fescue grass and hay during the third trimester.

Fescue can cause:
- prolonged gestation (up to 12 plus months)
- no or decreased milk production
- foaling difficulties from a larger foal
- red bag. Red bag is a thickened fetal membrane that can not be broken naturally during the birthing process. If not found quickly, the foal with suffocate and die. A red bag is pictured below.

Please monitor your mares at least twice a day or more for signs of labor.

This is for my beef and dairy producers. According to Beef Quality Assurance (BQA), the neck is the best place to give any injection to a cow/bull. Never give a shot in the rump. Reason being is meat Quality. Anywhere else can/will damage muscle which harms the value of the carcess. If you give it in the neck, little valuable muscle is damaged and if damage does occur, it can be easily trimmed off the meat.
