(2/2) For twelve years, my showing life and existence as I know it has included this magnificent beast.  He is my Constant and identity ( anyone?).  Until you experience it for yourself, it is not possible to truly convey what it feels like to get on a horse and just know every single thing there is to know about them.

You know his shape and cadence.
His rhythm.  His breath.
The feel of the course before you even jump it.
Bally, you are the other half of my soul 🤍

I’m babbling because I’m trying to convince myself to wrap it up.  Few riders get to enjoy the privilege of retiring a sound horse who could easily continue for years (Hey, if you’ve met Bally, you know this is MORE than entirely plausible).

But how could I ask him? This horse owes. me. nothing.  I owe him everything.  He was the first horse I ever developed to 1.60m level; a quirky - and occasionally feral - but featherlight powerhouse that could jump whatever I needed him to.  The most reliable partner I could ever deserve.  As he heads into this 20th year, I’m claiming that would get repetitive to do more (I mean, what is his career missing?) It was a fairy tail ending to close out his career once again representing Team Canada (Vejer de la Frontera 3-0*)

Balintore.  BML Balia NL.  Bally… you deserve this beyond any horse I know.  Enjoy your retirement.  Enjoy every single moment.  Your sparkling and stalwart presence will be sorely missed at the shows. I adore you beyond all. 🥰

Thank you to every single person that contributed to this special horse’s wonderful career!

183 times.

That’s how many times the words “Balintore &  Susan Horn, for Canada” was announced across international stadiums.  There must be 100s more more national classes on 3 continents, across 5 countries, and spread over 9 different provinces or states.

World Cup Qualifier.  ✔️
WEF 5* Night Class. ✔️
Spruce Meadows International Ring. ✔️ (oh, and top five finish at the Masters? ✔️)
International Week at the Royal. Also ✔️

Over the course of a decade of FEI competition, in additional to his 59 5* starts, he had 2 podium finishes at the 1.60m level and just shy of 40 top ten placings across the board.

It was our immense pleasure to represent Team Canada as an individual 6 times over the course of his career.  For his 5th appearance, he did so as a named Team Horse and completed his first ever Nations Cup at the age of 19.  Team Canada would come home with a bronze finish.

Balintore… sometimes “Balin-tor-EH” (he’s extra fancy in Spain).
The horse with THE tail. The horse that trained perfect strangers to feed him treats.  The horse that took off with 3 separate Olympic riders (… oops 😐).  Also the 19 year old horse that was most recently mistaken for an 8 year old.

Continues… ➡️

“You’d never know he’s nineteen…”

🇨🇦 Team Canada - CSIO3* Traverse City 2025
This weekend meant a lot to me. This amazing horse who had represented Canada so many times but always as bridesmaid, never the bride… His moment finally came at age 19 and I’m forever grateful to for giving us this opportunity.

✨ Major League Show Jumping 2022 ✨
Bally always loved the atmosphere of a night class no always rose to the occasion. Even though we had the heart breaker rail, I always think back fondly on this round as he just felt… well, unbelievable. The class also represented the first major Grand Prix that Bally had jumped post-Covid and it just felt like a against the odds comeback of sorts for a senior horse that no one expected 💪🏼

🌴Winter Equestrian Festival 2019🌴
That WEF Wk 11 when torrential downpours forced the 4* WEF Qualifier from the derby field into the dressage arena last minute 🫠 Nothing beats jumping 1.55m in a shoebox when you prepped for a giant grass field…

I’d say it worked out okay 😜

A little trot down memory lane. A handful of our favourite rounds, the ones that stick with you whether you won or not, whether you were clear or not. Just the rounds that were Special.

Spruce Meadows Masters 2022
This was the 1.50m winning round. Starting in the middle of the pack, not a single rider in this 5* line-up this point had managed the course without faults (you know, just Spruce things…) Bally and I were the first to conquer the course without a rail and qualified for the second round with just two time faults 🖤

Pleased to finally meet baby California Z in person 🦄 This little man is a 2024 Zangersheide c**t by Chacoon Blue. His mother, Pennsylvania Balia NL is half sister to our Grand Prix star, Balintore, and full sister to Florida Balia NL, another top level mare by the wonderful granddam, Utah NL 🤩

Halfway through our 2024 Spruce Meadows tour and our trajectory is right on track 🚀

Each member of the Team Grey and Team Bay show team has produced clear rounds in their respective divisions with exciting additional highlights including a return to the 5* level for Dominka van de Lucashoeve, an enthusiastic return to sport for the one and only Balintore, and solid, executed rounds turned in for Balstakko during his first visit to this competitive venue. 🤎

A much welcomed week of rest is on the horizon before we return for another fortnight in the Wild West. 🤠
