Adoptable Chichi, Onyx, and Del want to BUST some myths going around about the SPCA of Luzerne County! 💥
They're seeing a bunch of comments on our social media pages and want to set the record straight!
❌Myth: You need a fenced in yard to adopt a dog.
✅Truth: We don't have a fenced in yard requirement! While our adoptions team may strongly recommend a fenced in yard for certain dogs, it's not a requirement for adoption.
❌Myth: Adopting from the SPCA of Luzerne County is so difficult!
✅Truth: We make our adoption process reasonable while also ensuring our animals are going to the proper homes. We require potential adopters to fill out an application, and then check their adoption history, if they own their property or rent, have permission from a landlord to adopt, and if they have a good vet history if they owned pets previously.
❌Myth: It's so expensive to adopt an animal from the SPCA!
✅Truth: We offer some of the lowest adoption fees in the area. It costs $120 to adopt a dog, $70 to adopt a cat, and $50 to adopt a rabbit. We also have various costs for reptiles, birds, and small mammals. Our adoption fee includes a spay or neuter surgery, microchip, vaccines, flea/tick treatment, and deworming. We also have a Seniors Love Adoption Program where people 60+ can adopt animals designated as seniors for half price.
❌Myth: You're padding the pockets of executives if you adopt from the SPCA.
✅Truth: The SPCA of Luzerne County is not affiliated with the ASPCA and does not have a team of executives or CEOs. Instead, we have one executive director whose salary can be around on our Form 990 on our website, and a dedicated team of full- and part-time staff members who help care for our animals.
❌Myth: The SPCA won’t adopt to people with kids.
✅Truth: Many of our adoptive families have kiddos! However, our adoptions team wants to ensure that our animals are going to homes where they'll feel comfortable. If we know an animal will be uncomfortable around kids of a certain age or didn't do well with kids in a former home, they will explain that to the potential adopter and provide the names of animals who may be more suitable for that home. But we have no problem adopting to families with kids!
If you're interested in adopting an animal, fill out our application at spcaluzernecounty.org or call us at 570-825-4111 ext 102 to inquire about animals that may fit into your home!
