A little food for thought, but really just common sense!
💔 This is why rescues must say no sometimes. 💔
A few months ago, I received an email from a family member asking to adopt a kitten for their 80-year-old mother’s birthday. As both a rescuer and a physical therapist, I gently explained why this was not a safe idea:
• Young kittens are constantly underfoot and unpredictable
• High fall risk, especially for someone using a walker
• Blood thinners + thin skin = serious injury risk from scratches
• Kittens need play, stimulation, and often another kitten
• Nighttime biting, climbing, and zoomies are overwhelming
I truly tried to advocate for the safety of the senior and the well-being of the kitten.
Fast-forward to today.
I walked into a patient’s home for a PT visit… and there was an 8-week-old kitten sitting in a Kleenex box next to her chair.
Yes — it was the same woman.
Yes — she was the mother from that original email.
Two months later, she has fallen THREE times because the kitten runs under her feet and walker.
She’s exhausted because the kitten plays and bites all night.
Her arms are scratched.
Her furniture is damaged.
And now comes the most heartbreaking part.
This woman is devastated. She was crying hysterically during my visit because she has fallen completely in love with this kitten — but she knows she cannot safely keep it. Her health, balance, and safety are at risk, and she is terrified of falling again. This is not a lack of love. This is heartbreak caused by a placement that never should have happened.
This kitten is beautiful, loving, and innocent — but this was not an appropriate match.
And to make it worse, the rescue that adopted the kitten out has never checked back in and is not communicating with her now.
🚨 This is exactly why responsible rescues do NOT place young kittens with elderly adopters.
Saying “no” is not being unkind — it is being ethical.
Now I am trying to help find this sweet kitten a safe, appropriate home — because the human is at risk, and the kitten deserves better.
Please let this be a reminder:
👉 Adoption decisions affect real lives
👉 Safety must come first
👉 Follow-ups matter
👉 And sometimes love means saying no
