I filled his water bowl with river rocks so the height is just right for him to climb in and out on his own. 💙

Everyone… meet Bucky Barnes — our tiny reptile version of the Winter Soldier. He is a new permanent resident 🐢⭐️

He may only have one front leg, but just like his Marvel namesake, he’s a total badass survivor with a tougher story than most heroes. Hit by a vehicle, rescued, patched up, and now living his best life at our rescue — this little guy has earned his superhero name.

No metal arm, but plenty of grit. No dramatic theme music, but he does have a custom burrow coming soon. Welcome home, Bucky. 💚

🌿 Why Gopher Tortoises Matter 🌿
Gopher Tortoises are a keystone species in Florida — meaning the entire ecosystem depends on them. Their burrows provide shelter for more than 350 other species, giving countless animals a safe place to escape predators and extreme weather. When a Gopher Tortoise digs, the whole ecosystem benefits.

Because Gopher Tortoises rely heavily on their strong front legs to dig deep underground burrows, he’ll never be able to safely return to the wild. But don’t worry — he’ll still get to live his best tortoise life here! We’re already planning a custom underground burrow just for him so he has a cool, safe place to retreat from the heat or cold. And on cold nights, he’ll be brought indoors to stay warm and comfortable.

(This is a temporary enclosure. Being that he is so small and has a physical disability, we didn't want to make this temp pen too large. We'll be monitoring him as he gets stronger and more used to getting around on 3 legs for a bit before deciding on a more permanent enclosure size)

**We are an FWC approved facility for this non-releasable Gopher Tortoise. These are illegal to take and own as pets so please do not try to bring one home**

Do you absolutely hate green grass? Perfect! Because Aslan, our Sulcata Tortoise, is ready to help you achieve that beautiful, patchy, dirt-only aesthetic you never knew you needed. 🐢✨

Tired of mowing? He’s your guy. He’ll personally handle your landscaping by eating, flattening, and bulldozing everything in his path—grass, plants, lawn décor, and probably your patio furniture if you let him. 💪

Aslan is a living bulldozer, a true tank with a heart of gold (and the appetite of a goat). He could someday reach over 200 lbs, and with proper care, he’ll outlive you, your kids, and possibly your grandkids, just to keep the tradition of lawn destruction alive. ❤️

🐢 Tortoise Reunion & Reminder 🐢

Last week we reunited a lost Sulcata named Fleta with her family. She had wandered about 800 ft before a neighbor found her.

Because her owner had clear shell photos (she has a unique split scute), we were able to confirm her ID quickly and get her home the same day. 💚

👉 Lesson for all tortoise owners:

▪︎ Take detailed shell photos for ID

▪︎ Let your neighbors know you have a tortoise and talk to as many people as possible

▪︎ If one goes missing, post online and put up fliers right away

Thanks to quick action, Fleta’s story had a happy ending. Let’s help more tortoises find their way home! 🐢✨

This is Aslan and he was found in a very rural area wandering on his own. It has been almost a full month and no owners have come forward. He is looking for a new home and family. Friendly, outgoing personality. Loves to graze on grass and Timothy/Orchard hay. No idea how old since reptiles can grow at different rates depending on diet and husbandry. He will be ready to go home after Aug. 11th (full 30 days from date found) 🐢

He's in a standard Gorilla Cart for size reference. 😁

Located in Oxford near Ocala/The Villages.

(Please do some basic research on Sulcata aka African Spur Thighed Tortoises prior to reaching out. They can get up to 200lbs. They are destructive tanks that love to bulldoze and demolish whatever is in their path. They can and will just ram through weak enclosure fencing. There's a reason why so many end up escaping. Adopter is required to have a proper approved enclosure prior to taking a Sulcata home. Please keep in mind that you must factor in winter preparations for an outdoor reptile meaning an insulated shelter for cold days/nights)

❤️ ADOPTION ANNOUNCEMENT ❤️

Arya (now Katniss) has been adopted by Kelly and her family of bird nerds. I am so happy because she is just doing so fantastic in her new home and having a lot of fun with indoor flight training. Kelly's plan is for Katniss to be a future free flyer so we are so excited to watch how her training progresses. 💕

Kelly is a fellow rescue in Jacksonville called The Oliver Tree Parrot Rescue. Although she has intakes all the time, she just knew Katniss was meant to be hers and has been messaging me for months. Support your local rescue by Liking and Following their rescue page. 🦜
