We get this question a lot. "Do sliders make any horse slide?

The short answer is no.
Sliders *can* help a reining horse slide, but they don't make the horse slide on their own. We have had horses slide barefoot over 6ft. The sliding stop is a combination of:

1. Training & Technique – The horse must be taught to properly engage its hind end, stay collected, and keep forward momentum while allowing its hind legs to slide.

2. Conformation & Conditioning – A well-balanced horse with strong hindquarters and proper conditioning will perform better stops.

3. Footing – Reining arenas have a specific depth and type of ground (usually a well-maintained sand/clay mix) that allows for safe, controlled slides.

4. Sliders – These wider, flatter horseshoes reduce friction, allowing the horse to slide rather than dig into the ground

'Miss America's Princess' (Silva) represented those who couldn't be with family for special events at a local show. I wanted our Halloween costume to mean something special this year.

Silva did not disappoint and held her head proudly in the ring.

All it takes is one person to believe in you.

The very first horse we started under Sterling Performance Equine is back for a tune up. A lot of dreams were carried on this mare.

"Before you send your two year old off to the c**t starter.. here are a couple reminders :)

Have your horse’s teeth done and wolf teeth taken out before so accepting a bit isn’t an issue.

Make sure they are well fed but you don’t need to “fatten them up” with a bunch of sugary feeds before… just like you wouldn’t give your kid a basket of candy every day before school. A good training program will feed them according to the work load and their body condition and they should build muscle and lose the baby fat over the course of a few months.

You don’t need to do ground work to prepare them for the c**t starter. Unless you have incredible timing, it may actually hinder the process. And for the love….do not saddle them. You only get one shot at their first experience with a saddle and 1,000 things can go wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing. Leave it to the professional that you are paying.

Communicate your goals and plans for your horse with your trainer so you’re on the same page. Ask them what you can realistically expect after a few months and how often you should expect to hear from them throughout the process.

It never hurts to preemptively start your horse on an ulcer prevention protocol before you send them off and then keep them on the meds or the supplements of your choice for the first month of training. The first month is usually the most stressful as there are a lot of new things being thrown at them. It just keeps things rolling smoothly instead of waiting for problems to arise.

Stay in communication with your trainer about any soundness or health issues that could come up. The quicker you catch things the better. It’s not terribly uncommon to discover things like OCDs or other existing issues once the horse is put under more physical pressure.

My last tip is to pay on time and show appreciation. C**t starting is probably the least recognized and most thankless part of a horse’s training and career. There aren’t usually headlines written about us. But a sincere thank you goes a long way."
