Did you know 1 in 3 pets will go missing in their lifetime? Even more heartbreaking - only 1 in 10 are ever found. 💔

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, serving as a reminder to take proactive steps to protect your pet. Here are some tips on how to keep them safe:

🐶 Train your pet to come to you on voice command
🦮 Keep pets on a leash in unfenced areas
🐾 Microchip your pet and keep your contact information updated
🐕‍ Get your pet a secure and updated ID tag

If your pet goes missing:
File a lost animal report with local police, post on community social media platforms like Facebook and Nextdoor, check with neighbors about yard searches and security footage, scout local parks and trails, and contact all animal shelters in your area.

Foxtail Identification
•Foxtails are dry, barbed grass awns.
• You’ll find them in tall grasses, fields, and along roadsides during warm, dry months.

Why Foxtails are Dangerous
• The barb-like seeds can burrow into your pet’s skin, ears, nose, eyes, and lungs—causing infection, pain, abscesses, and even internal damage.

Checking Your Pet For Foxtails
• Foxtails are commonly found near the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, groin, and feet but may lodge anywhere on the body.
• Don’t try to remove an embedded foxtail—seek veterinary care!

How to Protect Your Pet
• Avoid tall grassy areas
• Use a protective hood like the OutFox Field Guard
• Check your pet after outdoor play
• Monitor your pet for limping, swelling, sneezing, coughing, head shaking, excessive licking, and other signs of discomfort

If you pet has a foxtail, contact us at 316-262-5321, or seek care with your primary care veterinarian right away.

📣 Bentley’s Big Bark is Back!

Bentley, a 1-year-old English Golden Retriever, was referred to Dr. Doug Winter, our board-certified veterinary dentist, after his vet discovered he couldn’t open his mouth during a routine neuter. A CT scan revealed that part of his jaw had fused to his skull—likely from an old injury.

To help Bentley regain normal function, Dr. Winter Winter, DVM, AVDC, AVDC-ZWD (Zoo & Wildlife) performed a segmental mandibulectomy—a surgery where a small portion of the jawbone is carefully removed. This freed the jaw, allowing him to open his mouth again.

We’re thrilled to report that Bentley is now back to eating, playing with his toys, and barking louder than ever! 🐾💙

Watch Her Go!

This is what determination looks like! Chicken is adapting to her new prosthetic and learning how to get around in her own uniquely adorable way.

🦷 Broken teeth are more common in pets than you might think—and they can be painful.

Chewing on hard items like marrow bones, cow hooves, antlers, or even ice can crack or break your pet’s teeth. As a rule of thumb, if it’s harder than your fingernail, it’s too hard for their teeth!

A broken tooth can expose the pulp cavity leading to serious pain and infection.

Watch for signs like:
🔹 Difficulty chewing
🔹Excessive drooling
🔹 Reluctance to eat
🔹 Sudden aggression or irritability

If your pet has a broken or injured tooth, it is important to seek medical care immediately. If you act quickly and your pet gets the right medical attention, they should recover well.

⚠️ Did you know? Many common household medications can be toxic to pets—and ibuprofen is at the top of the list.

Even small amounts can lead to stomach ulcers or kidney failure in dogs and cats. Keep your pets safe with these tips:

✅ Keep all medications both for humans and pets away from your animals.

✅ Never leave pills OR pill bottles sitting on the counter or in a place that a pet can reach them.

✅ If you accidentally drop a pill when taking it out of the bottle, quickly pick it up so you know your pet won't find and eat it.

✅ Never give a medication to your pet without consulting a veterinarian first.

If you suspect your pet has consumed a human medication or a medication meant for another pet in your household, immediately contact VESH at (316) 262-5321. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. "
