This is not about drama or revenge. This is about integrity, transparency and consumer protection. I stayed silent, didn’t name the person or business involved, hoping things would be resolved privately. At this point, I feel it is necessary to share my experience with Adara Van Ravenswaaij and her business, North Star K9’s Professional Training in Wichita, Kansas so that no one else ends up in the same position.
We met her at the Wichita Kennel Club where she was helping with a conformation class. Close to the end of the class she handed out her business cards. We took one because one of our trainers was moving out of state. I reached out to her on her website and asked her to contact us, which she did, and we arranged a private session with her on May 6, 2024. From the beginning, she was super nice, warm, charming. Her tone made very easy to work with, seemed genuinely concerned with training our dogs and their well being.
We had a couple of private sessions with her at our home, but we have a year-old female borzoi that needed some extra attention. Our dog went with Adara for a board and train before a show. It helped some, Adara convinced us that additional training would be required for improvement. We were going to receive a pick of the litter female from our breeder, a beautiful golden color. She arrived at about 11 weeks old. Adara met her and thought that a 3 week board and train would benefit her greatly considering we had a show coming up that would be her debut. She worked with our puppy Anora for a little less than a week before we received a call. Adara believed that Anora had broke her leg. She let our 1 year old sighthound out with our 13 week old puppy. Supposedly, our year old borzoi rolled the puppy and stepped on its leg. I say supposedly because at the college the veterinarians were surprised by the explanation of how the injury happened. I just want to reassure everyone reading this that we specifically instructed Adara to not let any other dog out with the puppy. No dogs out with our young puppy, Anora.
Anora broke her leg in two places, one up by her hip joint and the other by her knee. She had surgery to repair it but unfortunately, it did not heal correctly, and the leg had to be amputated. Adara has not been held accountable for Anora’s medical care, a whopping $17,000. None of this would’ve happened IF she had done as we asked and not let Anora out with ANY other dogs. I hired a lawyer to help and still, she cannot and will not pay for Anora’s medical bills. In a letter sent from her lawyer she indicated that she didn’t know what borzoi were and it was our responsibility to tell her that they “chase” prey. Again, we told her not to let our baby Anora out with any other dogs.
Adara Van Ravenswaaij, owner of North Star K9’s Professional Training (nsk9’s.com) is not arguing that she isn’t negligent. No, just that she can’t pay for the damage that was done to my 13-week-old puppy. She did, however, offer us two “free” training sessions for Anora. Somehow, I’m supposed to trust her with my tri-dawg when she clearly couldn’t care for her when she had four legs? I want to make it perfectly clear….we LOVE Anora, what happened was 100% preventable.
I’m sharing my experience because I don’t want anyone else to be drawn into the same empty promises, the same deception, the same promise of help. If this post saves even one person from this level of emotional and financial pain, then it’s worth all the hate I will get for making it.
