Today is so it seems like a great opportunity to remind you that if you live in North Texas/Texoma and you use pumpkins in your decorations, please save them for us! Our rescued goats and our longhorns love having them as treats. Our goats especially love the pumpkin seeds, but if we cut the pieces small enough, they also like eating the meat of the pumpkin. If you buy the small squash/gourds, we can use those as well. Sometimes the working dogs like to take one of the mini pumpkins and use it as a chew toy. Whether they eat it or just play with it, they enjoy having them, and if a dog walks away from one, we can pick it up, cut it in half, and give it to one of the longhorns, for whom those little minis are snacking size.
If you paint your pumpkins, we won't feed those to the stock, but we set them just outside the fence where they can compost naturally and produce vines for next year. Some years, we have several pretty pumpkins from vines that come up. Because of the drought, none of this year's vines survived long enough to produce fruit.
