We work in a barn.
I know. Thank you, Captain Obvious.

One of the fun things about working in a barn is that the outside world often decides to join us on the inside. This week, our unexpected coworkers were a family? group? collection? of tiny ants.

It’s been a hot minute since I spent any meaningful time observing ants, but if you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it. Someone dropped a peanut. And just like that — organization. Strategy. Teamwork. The peanut was dismantled piece by tiny piece and carried off to their underground headquarters with impressive efficiency.

The lesson revealed itself pretty quickly.

When something feels too big to tackle, too overwhelming to manage alone, call your people. Ask for help. Be willing to accept it. And when you hear someone else asking for help, show up with your whole heart. Together, we can carry far more than we ever could on our own.

We live in a world where “connection” often involves Wi-Fi passwords and modems. This week’s invitation is to reconnect with the physical world. Tackle a project you’ve been avoiding. Invite friends or family you haven’t seen in a while to help. Share a meal. Build memories.

Also — it’s a colony of ants.
Yes, I had to Google that. 😄

If you made it this far, I challenge you to drop a fun name for a group of animals in the comments… then put down your phone and go get some fresh air. 🧡🐴

As we step into the Year of the Horse, we find ourselves smiling because if anyone already knows how powerful, meaningful, and transformative horses are… it’s this community. 🐴🧡

Across cultures, the Year of the Horse symbolizes strength, freedom, resilience, movement, and connection. Horses are seen as guides who help us move forward with courage, teach us balance, and remind us to trust both ourselves and one another.

At TBTRC, we see this every single day. Our horses aren’t just part of our program - they are the program. Each one brings their own personality, wisdom, honesty, and quiet magic. Together, they help create a space where growth happens, healing begins, and people feel seen exactly as they are.

Welcome 2026 - The Year of the Horse!

Here’s to a year of connection, courage, and moving forward together. 🧡🐴

After sharing the quiet magic that settles over the ranch when snow blankets the ground, Northwest Montana reminded us who’s really in charge. A rare atmospheric river rolled through, washing away the snow and leaving us with days of wintery mix, steady rain… and a surprise appearance of Lake Two Bear in our arena.

As our equine manager, Anna, so perfectly summed it up:
“Outside is dark. Inside is wet. Anna is sad.”

Enter the cavalry, our incredible ranch managers, Tyler Barnes and Mitch Barnes, who showed up quickly with sandbags, gravel, and problem-solving grit. Within hours, water was redirected and the ranch got back to life.

So what did I learn this week?
That when things feel dismal, or just plain sad, leaning on one another matters. Asking for help matters. And if we do, we may be surprised by how our community shows up.

Our horses led the way, calmly working around the “lake” as it slowly reabsorbs showing us a masterclass in going with the flow. Adjust. Breathe. Remember why we’re here and who we’re here with. Light a fire. Gather your people. Share space.

When we do that, the hard stuff doesn’t feel quite so heavy. And the challenges life throws our way just might become opportunities for new, shared stories. 🧡🐴

🎄 Join Us for a Holiday Celebration & Farewell to Kat Licence 🧡

The snow has settled in, the barn is cozy, and we’d love to gather with you, our community, to celebrate the season together.

Please join us for a warm and joy-filled Holiday Celebration at Two Bear Therapeutic Riding Center, where we will also honor and bid farewell to our founding Executive Director, Kat Licence, as she steps into her next chapter.

Kat’s vision, courage, and heart are woven into every inch of this ranch, and we can’t imagine a better way to celebrate her than surrounded by the community she helped build.

✨ Come enjoy:
• Holiday treats & warm drinks
• Roaring Fire
• Connection with staff, volunteers & friends
• A heartfelt farewell for Kat as she rides toward new adventures

We hope you’ll share this special moment with us and help send Kat off with all the love and gratitude she deserves.
All are welcome. 🧡🐴

Snow has finally begun to fall here in northwest Montana, and with it comes a quiet that settles over the ranch like a soft blanket. While the rest of the world seems to be speeding up with holiday energy, something different is happening here - a gentle slowing, a deep breath, a settling-in.

This week, I’ve discovered one of my new favorite feelings on the property: running my fingers through the fuzzy winter coats of our beautiful herd. There’s a groundedness in it… a kind of calm that feels almost sacred. Horses don’t hurry this season. They lean into it, soften into it, accept its pace. They remind us that there is wisdom in slowing down.

Appreciate the natural rhythm of nature and of ourselves.
Breathe a little deeper.
Rest in this peaceful season.
Reconnect with yourself, with others, and with the land and herd that hold so much quiet magic.

Wishing you all a moment of stillness and softness this week. 🧡🐴

Our hearts are full of gratitude! This year was the most successful in our history - not because of any one event, but because of the strength, generosity, and spirit of the people who surround Two Bear Therapeutic Riding Center.

Our Campfire for a Cause fundraiser in May brought together friends, families, and supporters who believe in the healing power of horses and the importance of creating spaces where every person can grow, connect, and thrive. Your presence, your gifts, and your belief in our mission lit up that night and carried its warmth forward all year long.

And this fall, the Great Fish Community Challenge reminded us once again just how remarkable our community is. You showed up with open hands and open hearts, helping us not only meet but surpass our goals. Every dollar given is already at work helping participants build confidence, independence, and deeper connection with themselves and with a little help from our equine partners, of course.

To every donor, volunteer, family, participant, partner organization, and friend: THANK YOU! You are the reason 2025 was a landmark year. You are the reason our herd can continue doing life-changing work. And you are the reason we step into the new year with hope, momentum, and gratitude.

Together, we are building something powerful. Something honest. Something that changes lives.

From all of us at Two Bear Therapeutic Riding Center—thank you for believing in this work and for being part of our story.🧡

Magical Date Night at TBTRC reminded us once again how powerful community can be.

We were honored to host four wonderful family units for an evening designed to give parents and caregivers of our participants (and their siblings!) a well-earned night off, while their kids enjoyed a safe, laughter-filled adventure here at the ranch.

10 incredible kids, ages 3 to 11, and two fantastic junior volunteers leading the fun! The barn came alive with joy and the night lit up literally with glow stick tag, “sardine” tag, and plenty of sensory-friendly play. The giggles and smiles said it all.

This is what community looks like.
This is what belonging feels like.
And this is why we do what we do.

To the families who trust us with their little ones, to the junior volunteers who stepped in with heart and enthusiasm, and to every supporter who makes programs like this possible - thank you.

Here’s to more connection, more joy, and more evenings where kids get to be kids while parents get the break they deserve. 🧡

As a brand-new Executive Director who didn’t live the full history of how TBTRC became the incredible place it is today, I’m learning to put my hand up a lot. I ask for stories, context, background, and explanations and sometimes I feel like an inquisitive toddler:
“Why is the sky blue?”
“What does this button do?”
“How do you know what someone needs if they don’t speak?”
“What is the horse communicating when he does that?”
And my personal favorite:
“Wait… you do WHAT with arm-length gloves?”
Let’s just say there are some things I’ve learned that I cannot unlearn. *Shivers. 😄

But here’s what I’m discovering: humility and humor are essential tools when tackling hard or new things.

Our equine partners reinforce this lesson every day. Each brings their own strengths, quirks, and confidence - along with absolute honesty. Some are patient and steady, some curious and bold, some tentative but brave. Every one of them is a teacher. They show us what it means to trust, to communicate clearly, and to stay present.

So as you tackle your week, I invite you to be brave. Be open to connection. Ask the questions. Embrace the discomfort.
It’s worth it. I promise. 🧡🐴
