🌼🐾 Allergy Season is Here — Is Your Pet Feeling It Too? 🐾🌼

At Norwich Regional Animal Hospital, we see a big increase in allergy cases this time of year — and pets don’t always show it the way we expect.

🐶🐱 Signs your pet may have allergies:

🐾 Skin & ears
• Excessive itching or scratching
• Licking/chewing paws (often reddish or stained)
• Red, inflamed skin
• Hair loss or hot spots
• Frequent ear infections or head shaking

🐾 Eyes & face
• Watery eyes
• Sneezing (more common in cats)
• Face rubbing

🐾 Less obvious signs
• Scooting
• Recurrent skin infections
• Changes in coat quality

💡 Cats can be more subtle:
Overgrooming, hair loss, or small scabs (especially around the head/neck) are common signs.

⚠️ Allergies are more than just “itchy” —
they can lead to secondary infections and ongoing discomfort if not treated.

🛠️ The good news? We have options:
✔️ Medications to control itching
✔️ Allergy management plans
✔️ Diet trials if food allergies are suspected

If your pet seems uncomfortable, don’t wait — we’re here to help 💙

🕷️🐾 Tick-Borne Diseases Are On The Rise 🐾🕷️

At Norwich Regional Animal Hospital, we’re seeing an increase in tick exposure — and with that comes a higher risk of tick-borne diseases.

🦠 Ticks can transmit serious illnesses like:
• Lyme disease
• Anaplasmosis
• Ehrlichiosis

These diseases don’t always show obvious signs — but they can still cause long-term effects.

🚨 Signs to watch for:
• Limping or shifting leg lameness
• Lethargy
• Fever
• Decreased appetite
• Joint pain

(Some pets show no signs at all)

🩸 Why yearly testing matters:
We recommend annual 4DX testing (tick-borne diseases + heartworm).

💡 The 4DX test checks for exposure, not active infection.
That means your pet could test positive even if they’re not currently showing symptoms — and it helps guide next steps.

✔️ Catches exposure early
✔️ Allows for follow-up testing if needed
✔️ Helps us stay ahead of disease

🛡️ Prevention + testing = best protection
Monthly preventatives are critical — but testing helps us catch what we can’t see.

🛡️🐾 How Monthly Preventatives Actually Work 🐾🛡️

At Norwich Regional Animal Hospital, one of the biggest misconceptions we hear is this 👇

💡 Monthly preventatives do NOT repel fleas & ticks.
They have to bite your pet to be exposed to the medication and die.

🦟 So why use them?
✔️ Kill parasites quickly after contact
✔️ Prevent infestations
✔️ Protect against serious diseases

🛑 Finding a tick doesn’t mean failure —
the goal is kill before disease transmission.

🔄 Can you double up?
👉 Yes — and we often recommend it.

• A monthly chew (we recommend Credelio Quattro)
PLUS
• A Seresto collar for added protection

In fact — many of our own staff and vets double up on preventatives, especially in high-risk areas.

💬 Every pet is different — lifestyle matters.
We’re happy to help you build the right plan 💙

🦠🐾 Parvo Alert – We’re Seeing a Spike 🐾🦠

At Norwich Regional Animal Hospital, we want to give our community a heads up —
we are seeing an increase in Parvovirus cases in the region.

Parvo is highly contagious and can be life-threatening, especially for puppies and unvaccinated dogs.
💔 Puppies are the most affected, as their immune systems are still developing and they are not fully vaccinated yet.

💔 What makes it so scary?
• Spreads easily through contaminated environments (yards, parks, shoes, etc.)
• Can survive in the environment for months
• Hits fast and hard

🚨 Signs to watch for:
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting
• Severe diarrhea (often bloody)
• Dehydration

If your puppy is showing any of these signs — don’t wait. Call us right away.

🛡️ The good news: Parvo is preventable.
Vaccination is your pet’s best protection.

✔️ Puppies should follow a proper vaccine schedule
✔️ Adults should stay up to date on boosters
✔️ Avoid high-traffic dog areas if your puppy is not fully vaccinated

🐾 Extra precautions right now:
• Be mindful at dog parks and public spaces
• Clean shoes/hands after high-risk areas
• Limit exposure for young or unvaccinated dogs

We know how scary this can be — but awareness and prevention make all the difference.

If you have questions about your pet’s vaccine status or risk, we’re here to help 💙

🐾💙 National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day + Animal Advocacy Day 💙🐾

Today is about more than just adoption — it’s about speaking up, showing up, and standing behind the animals who need us most.

At Norwich Regional Animal Hospital, we’re lucky to be part of that support system every single day — and today, we want to shine a light on one very special girl… Mae 💙

She came to us as just a baby…
Underweight. Weak. Shut down.
The kind of case that stops you in your tracks.

But Mae? She didn’t give up.
And neither did the team behind her.

✨ With medical care, careful refeeding, and a whole lot of love, she’s already starting to show us who she really is — sweet, resilient, and so deserving of the life ahead of her.

Days like today remind us:
Adoption saves lives.
Advocacy changes lives.

Not every animal’s journey is easy — but every single one is worth it.

If you’re not in a place to adopt, there are still so many ways to help:
🐾 Foster
🐾 Share adoptable pets
🐾 Support local rescues
🐾 Donate toward medical care

💙 Donations for Mae’s ongoing care can be made directly through Potter’s Angels Rescue
💙 You can also call our clinic to contribute toward her medical needs
💙 Accepting donations of High protein puppy food, treats and chews as well for sweet Mae

It truly takes a village — and Mae has a pretty incredible one behind her.
