Monthly Review Time
Salinity by Aquavitro
The Good
- Mixes Quickly to specified salinity (ppt and specific gravity)
- Batch analysis avialable
- Consistent Parameters
The Not so Good
- Price, little higher than some other salts, BUT, still not at the top of the salt pile
- Mixes a little "cloudy" but clears in a few hours
- Availability may be inconsistent
Ok, so why am I reviewing a salt? Because I have switched to this salt over the last month or so from Instant Ocean (purple box). I had a couple boxes of instant ocean mix up to over 12dkh alkalinity, and I was tired of constantly adjusting the dosers to account for this. After going through 2 buckets of Salinity, the alkalinity mixed at 10.2 and 9.8 when tested with Salifert test kit, compared to 10.3 and 10.0 listed on the batch analysis from Aquavitro. This has made it much easier to keep alkalinity stable during water changes.
So what I like most, the batch analysis, the consistent mixing to the specific gravity I like, and the consistency in the parameters. The batch analysis is a GREAT reference for when testing a new batch of salt. It gives you an idea as to where the parameters should be, I say should be because we all know the deviation in the test kits we use account for allot of the "differences" we see in analysis to actual test kit results.
What could be better? The salt mixes up a little cloudy, but clears in a couple hours. This makes it so I need to mix the saltwater the night before I plan on doing water changes, which means I just need to adjust my schedule, but sometimes changes to habits are hard to make. The price is ok, it's not the cheapest nor is it the most expensive. When comparing salt remember to compare the price per gallon for how many gallons you actually get from the bucket, not what is listed on the outside of the box or bucket. Salinity made 225g of water per bucket (that is what is listed on the bucket as well), Instant Ocean I was only getting 172 gallons of saltwater mixed to 1.025 for each "200 gallon" box. My overall price per gallon only went up four cents in switching salts.
Overall, I am more than pleased with the salt and would recommend it to anyone. Any questions about it, feel free to comment or send a pm.
