More pets go missing around the 4th than almost any other time of year — fireworks send even calm, well-trained animals into pure flight mode. Here's how to actually be ready:
🐾 Call your vet now, not on the 3rd. If your dog or cat has a history of noise anxiety, ask about sedation or anti-anxiety options ahead of time — vets get slammed with these calls the week of, and some medications need a trial run before the actual night so you know how your pet reacts.
🆔 Double-check ID tags. Collar, current phone number, current address — don't assume it's still accurate if you've moved or switched numbers recently.
💻 Confirm microchip info is up to date. A chip only works if the registry has your current contact info attached to it. If you're not sure when you last checked, this is the week to log in and verify.
🏠 Bring everyone indoors well before dark. Even "never leaves the yard" dogs climb fences and dig under gates when they're panicked.
🚪 Secure the indoor space too — close windows, draw curtains, and make sure exterior doors are solid (a panicked dog can push through a screen door).
