Humane Society of Elmore County News – 8 Dec ‘25

Last week we discussed the cautions of timing and bringing a new pet home during the holidays. So for those who have decided the Christmas season is a great time to add a new pet to the family here are some more pointers to get everyone off to a good start.

The first thing to do is PREPARE your home, especially if you are bringing home a new puppy. If a puppy can get something in his mouth, it WILL eat or chew it! That’s why it’s essential to puppy proof your home and yard. Look at your house from your new puppy’s point of view. Get on your hands and knees so you don’t miss anything at ground level. Keep anything dangerous, like cleaning supplies, behind locked cupboard doors or stored up high. Tie all electrical cords out of your puppy’s reach. Knickknacks and cell phones can’t be destroyed if they’re kept in drawers or on a high shelf. Keep shoes in a closed closet. If you don’t want something to become a chew toy, prevent your puppy from getting it in the first place. Food smells will attract your puppy, so be sure he can’t get in your trash. Use baby gates or exercise pens to keep your puppy confined to safe areas or out of unsafe ones. Check the yard for things like poisonous plants, toxic chemicals, yard tools and look for holes or gaps under gates a small puppy could squeeze though. Direct your puppy to chew toys that are acceptable and reward it with heaps of praise for chewing on those items you have given it.

Please give your new pet time to adjust. There are dogs and a few cats that quickly adapt to their new home with little effort. But there are others for whom the change from their previous situation is more challenging and they will need extra time to adjust to their new home. For these pets it can be a matter of a days, a week or a month or more, but most will end up being wonderful pets if they are simply given the time to adjust and trust that they have a new and permanent home. You cannot force these pets to adapt on your timeline, so be honest with yourself if you are able and willing to help a new pet that might need just a bit longer to feel comfortable.

Get your new pet into your Veterinarian soonest for a check-up and any needed vaccinations & parasite control to get everyone off to a good start.

If you are bringing home a new kitten, most the above still applies but you have to also look high since kittens climb and jump quite well. To help a kitten or new cat transition, give it a place to hide. Cardboard boxes or sheets draped over chairs make ideal hiding spots when you first bring a kitty home. If the kitten or cat does hide, just let it be and let it come out to investigate on its own timeline. Just like dogs you cannot force a new cat to come around on your schedule. Make sure the kitten/cat knows where its litter box is located and place the food and water across the room or in another room as who wants to eat next to their toilet.

Keeping new pets confined to limited areas of the house can help greatly in not only housetraining but just keeping them safe as they learn about their new home. Don’t worry if your new pet(s) doesn’t eat all that well the first 24-48 hours as they learn new routines.

And let your pet get to know you and your family before taking it out in public as that places even more stress on an animal that might be struggling to feel comfortable with its new owner(s). With puppies & kittens you should also be cautious of taking them everywhere before they are well-vaccinated. If your holiday schedule is beyond hectic with parties and activities, perhaps delay bringing in a new pet until after the first of the year when things are calmer, and you have more time to help your new pet become a loved member of your family. Sadly all of our area Shelters will still have many pets in need of new homes after the New Year, and every month

Meet Grasshopper, one of our longest canine residents who has been at the shelter over 5 months.

Dog of the Day - Grasshopper

Grasshopper is a Lab mix who is 8 1/2 months old as of early December. He should be in the 40-50 pound range when fully grown. Found, with his siblings, as discarded pups. A bit shy at first, Grasshopper is sweet, loving and looking for a family to call his own. In true Lab fashion, Grasshopper LOVES water!

Our dog adoption fee is $100. This adoption fee completely covers the mandatory spay or neuter, basic immunizations, de-worming, microchip, heartworm check for dogs, rabies vaccination if old enough, and a free health exam with your participating veterinarian.

Cat of the Day - Gingko

Gingko is a four-year-old female dilute torti - INDOOR ONLY. She is one of four cats brought to us after their owner passed away. She was very scared and shy but is coming out of her shell. Very loving, would do best in a calmer, quieter home.

All cat adoptions include mandatory spay/neuter; basic kitty immunizations (FVR-CP+Calici); de-worming; one-year rabies vaccination if old enough; microchip from 24-Pet Watch; certificate for free health examination at your participating veterinarian; and a goodie bag chock full of information, toys, etc.

Dog of the Day - Ruby

Ruby is a 1 1/2-year-old female, 37 pounds, maybe a Heeler/Husky mix but that's just our best guess. She was found by a wonderful family who wanted to keep her and had all of her vetting done, but she just would not stop chasing the cattle, so it looks like Ruby is not a good farm dog candidate. She is crate trained but not housetrained, loves children & getting attention. Ruby is very smart, also VERY active - will need a 6' fence as she can easily sail over a 4'-5' fence and then does like to go investigate far and wide. Do not even think of chaining her (which is against our adoption standards and contract) as once she figures out what you are going to do she will take off and play keep away. Might be a great agility candidate to channel some of her energy.

Our dog adoption fee is $100. This adoption fee completely covers the mandatory spay or neuter, basic immunizations, de-worming, microchip, heartworm check for dogs, rabies vaccination if old enough, and a free health exam with your participating veterinarian.
