Yesterday I discovered that my bees were in “comb-pulling mood.” I remover all of that comb and put in frames that were drawn out.

Ok…the discussion was that if a honey bee dies after it stings a human why doesn’t it die went it stings another insect? The answer is that humans (and other mammals, for that matter) have skin that has some elasticity to it. The honey bee’s stinger has a barb on the end similar to a fishing hook. When the bee stings an animal with elasticity in their skin, the barb gets hung in the skin and as the bee moves away, the insides of the bee are pulled out as they are attached to the stinger, thereby being fatal for the bee.
On the other hand, when I bee stings another insect, the barb doesn’t get stuck as the invading insect has a hard exoskeleton on the outside of its body.

Here are bees protecting their home when an invading insect rolls through.

It’s pretty cold outside, but apparently the girls aren’t too bothered by the weather. I didn’t see any activity on the left hand hive, but I did see some activity there a few days ago. I’ll keep a close watch on that hive.

Well, the Alabama National Fair is in the books and Well-Beeing Apiaries Brought home the hardware (ribbons in this case)! Our first attempt at entering a candle made completely out of beeswax brought a Third Place Ribbon. Our extracted amber honey exhibit also brought home a Third Place ribbon. Our black jar entry (judged on taste alone) won the First Place ribbon! First place also came with a check!! In conclusion we can say that we have the best-tasting honey around…and my presentation skill need a little honing. 😎🥇🥉🥉💵

The results from the AHSTC / CABA at the Alabama National Fair are in. Each one of our Well-Beeing Apiaries exhibits placed.
Our first attempt at making bees wax candles gained a respectable 3rd place ribbon in the highly competitive art & craft category.

Our Amber Extracted Honey Exhibit also gained a 3rd place ribbon.

Our Black Jar entry Pulled the 1st Place Ribbon.

The Black Jar category is a category in which the honey is submitted in a “black jar,” so that the honey is completely obscured from view. The entry is ONLY judged on taste alone. A blue ribbon in this category simply says, this is the best tasting honey in the show!

So today, I was given the great news that each of my honey entries placed at the Alabama National Fair. My extracted amber honey exhibit took 3rd place in its category, my bees wax candle also took 3rd place in its category and my black jar honey entry took 1st place.

Each category is judged on catagory specific criteria. The Black Jar category is judged exclusively on taste alone.
