Meet Riggs... living proof that will eat just about anything. 🤦

While spending the day at the lake with his family, six-month-old Riggs decided that shorts, a bathing suit, and couch stuffing were on the dinner menu. (Spoiler alert: They were not.)

Later that evening, Riggs refused dinner and vomited more than 10 times. His family knew something wasn't right and brought him to right away.

Radiographs confirmed a foreign body obstruction, and Riggs was taken to surgery where our team successfully retrieved the materials he had ingested. After surgery, Riggs was hospitalized for 48 hours while he received IV fluids, antibiotics, pain medication, and gastrointestinal protectants as our team closely monitored his recovery.

Even when he wasn't feeling his best, Riggs remained the sweetest boy and quickly became a favorite with our team.

The best part? After two days of care, Riggs was bright, eating well, and acting like nothing had ever happened, ready to head home with his family (hopefully with a renewed appreciation for actual dog food).

Pictured here is Riggs after being discharged with his owner and one of our RVTs, Allison. We're so happy this curious pup made a full recovery! 💛

: If your pet swallows clothing, stuffing, toys, socks, or other non-food items, don't wait for symptoms to worsen. Foreign body obstructions can become life-threatening VERY quickly. If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn't, contact your local EVCC! ➡️ www.evcc.com/locations

What started as a trip to the dog park quickly turned into a fight for Winnie’s life.

While sniffing around, Winnie, a Chihuahua, suddenly jumped back and within minutes began vomiting and having diarrhea. After being referred to by her primary veterinarian, her owner discovered a bee stinger on her lip.

When Winnie arrived at our hospital, she was struggling to breathe, having trouble standing, appeared disoriented, and had low blood pressure. Our team diagnosed her with a severe anaphylactic reaction to the bee sting.

After a day of treatment with IV fluids, antihistamines, and supportive care, Winnie seemed to be improving and was even scheduled to go home the next morning.

Then, just two hours before discharge, everything changed when Winnie suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

Because our team closely monitors our patients, we recognized it immediately. We quickly intubated her, began CPR, and administered life-saving medications. After 15–20 minutes, Winnie’s heart started beating on its own again.

At first, Winnie was unable to see and showed significant neurologic deficits, but she continued to fight.

One of the moments that kept our team hopeful? Even while she was minimally responsive, Winnie's heart rate would increase whenever her family visited and spoke to her. 💙

Day by day, Winnie grew stronger. She began sitting up, walking with assistance, and eventually regained her vision. Just a few days later, she went home neurologically normal and back to being herself.

Today, Winnie is doing great and according to her mom, she's decided bees just aren't worth investigating anymore. 🐝

Bee stings can escalate quickly from mild irritation to a true emergency. If your pet shows vomiting, swelling, diarrhea, weakness, or breathing changes after a sting, seek immediately. LEARN MORE: www.evcc.com/blog/dog-stung-by-a-bee-on-the-mouth/

Snowball’s happy ending started with a scary moment.

This little white Chihuahua was brought to after being attacked by two larger dogs. When he arrived, Snowball was uncomfortable, had a large swelling on his stomach, and his family shared that he had been refusing to eat and vomiting at home.

After examination, our team diagnosed Snowball with a traumatic abdominal wall hernia; an injury where the abdominal wall is damaged, allowing internal tissues to move into an abnormal space.

Snowball underwent exploratory surgery, where our team found a portion of his small intestine within the herniated tissue. Thankfully, the intestine was carefully evaluated and found to be healthy, allowing our team to repair the abdominal wall defect and give him the best chance at recovery.

Snowball surprised everyone with how quickly he bounced back! Just 10 hours after surgery, his pain was controlled with oral medication, and he was feeling well enough to go home with his family.

His family was so grateful for the care he received, that they specifically asked to speak with Vet Assistant Liz before leaving to thank her. Throughout his visit, Liz spent time with his family discussing his care and helping them navigate the best path forward for their beloved pup.

Seeing Snowball leave our hospital with his family was the kind of happy ending every team hopes for!

We're honored to be here for pets and families when they need us most. ❤️

Thank you, Lauren Moss, for trusting our Mishawaka team with Luna's care and for sharing your experience.

Wishing this sweet girl a smooth and speedy recovery! 🐾

First things first, Luna is okay but she had a long night after a dental procedure🥹 Shoutout to EVCC in Mishawaka, one of the few 24 hour emergency services for animals in our area! The staff was so kind and took great care of our girl… and boy were they busy, showing just how important they are in our community!
