🐾 **Why Should You License Your Dog?** 🐾

As an Animal Control Officer, I've heard it all:

"It's just another tax."
"The government is tracking us."
"My dog never leaves the yard."

I understand why some people feel that way, but I'd like to explain why dog licensing is so important.

When you license your dog, we keep a record that includes your contact information, your dog's name, breed, color, age, and rabies vaccination status. While that may seem intrusive, that information becomes incredibly valuable when a dog is found wandering without a collar or license tag.

Believe it or not, we can often narrow down where a dog belongs based on its appearance, where it was found, and the information in our licensing records. Those records have helped reunite countless dogs with their families much faster than would otherwise be possible.

And for those who say, "My dog never leaves the yard," I can tell you from experience that I've heard that many times—usually while that same dog is sitting in the back of my vehicle or in our shelter waiting to go home.

Dogs dig under fences. Gates get left open. Storms spook them. Accidents happen.

Licensing your dog isn't just about complying with state law. It's about giving your pet another way home if the unexpected happens.

The cost of a dog license is small. The peace of mind it provides is priceless. ❤️🐶

🐾 June is Dog Licensing Month! 🐾

Did you know that all dogs 6 months of age and older are required to be licensed in Connecticut?

A dog license is more than just a legal requirement—it helps Animal Control quickly identify your pet and verify that their rabies vaccination is current. It is also one of the best tools for reuniting lost dogs with their families.

The cost of a dog license is under $20, (under $10 if your pup has been spayed or neutered) while the fine for an unlicensed dog is significantly higher.

Don't wait until the last minute! Make sure your dog's license is renewed before June 30th.

🐾 FOUND A BABY ANIMAL? 🐾

Spring and summer are baby animal season, and while it may be tempting to “rescue” every young animal you see, many are exactly where they are supposed to be!

Before stepping in, take a moment to observe from a distance. In many cases, mom is nearby and the best thing you can do is leave the animal alone. Removing healthy wildlife from their environment can do more harm than good.

Here are some quick tips:
🪶 Feathered baby birds hopping on the ground are usually fledglings learning to fly — leave them be.
🐇 Baby rabbits in a fur nest are often waiting for mom to return.
🦌 Fawns lying alone in the grass are NOT abandoned.
🐢 Turtles crossing the road can be helped across in the direction they were heading.

If you are unsure whether an animal truly needs help, please contact Weston Animal Control or a wildlife rehabilitator before intervening. We are always happy to guide you on the safest and best course of action for both you and the animal. 🐾

Does everyone remember Marmalade? 🧡

Well, Marmalade’s fosters officially became foster fails… and we could not be happier about it! They realized saying goodbye just was not an option, and now Marmalade has officially found her forever home.

This sweet girl now has two best friends (who are a little less furry 🧒👧), an amazing mom and dad who absolutely adore her, and she no longer has to share her food with a house full of other cats. 🐾

Happy tails, Marmy!! We are so happy you found the perfect family to call your own.

Continuing education is an important part of being an Animal Control Officer in Connecticut. ACOs are required to complete ongoing training throughout their careers so they can continue providing the best possible service to the communities, people, and animals they protect every day.

Today’s class, hosted by Best Friends Animal Society, focused on topics including animal law, sheltering, adoption outreach, and balancing compassion with compliance in animal control work. Trainings like these help officers stay current on changing laws, improve investigative skills, strengthen community relationships, and learn new ways to better serve both animals and the public.

Animal control is constantly evolving, and education never stops. Every class attended and every lesson learned helps make us stronger advocates for animal welfare and better resources for our communities.

Baby Boo wanted to stop by and say hello to all of our followers! 🐾

This sweet girl was adopted from us back in late 2025, and we could not be happier to see how much she is loving life in her forever home. Just look at that face — completely relaxed, spoiled, and clearly living her best life. ❤️

Getting updates like this means the world to us. Watching our former shelter pets grow into happy, loved family members is the reason we do what we do.

Thank you to Baby Boo’s family for giving her the wonderful home she deserves and for sharing this precious photo with us! 🐱✨

If your dog becomes lost, time is critical. Here are the first steps you should take:

🐾 Contact Animal Control immediately. The sooner we are notified, the sooner we can begin checking reports, calls, and sightings. Make sure to provide clear photos, a description, and the location your dog was last seen.

🐾 Contact Connecticut Dog Gone Recovery (DGR). DGR is an incredible group of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to help reunite lost dogs with their families. They provide guidance, support, tracking assistance, and help spread the word to bring pets home safely. https://www.ctdgrv.org/

🚫 Do not chase a scared dog. Many lost dogs are frightened and may continue running if pursued. Instead, report sightings and follow the guidance of recovery professionals.

📸 Keep recent photos of your pets and make sure collars, tags, and microchip information are always up to date.

Most importantly — do not give up. Many dogs have been reunited with their families days, weeks, and even months later thanks to quick action, teamwork, and community support. ❤️🐶
