This juvenile rat snake came in recently after being caught by a cat. Fortunately, after a full exam, we found no punctures — so he got very lucky!

Cat attacks are one of the most common reasons we see snakes, songbirds, and other small wildlife admitted. Even minor scratches or bites can quickly turn serious — and often become fatal within 24–48 hours without antibiotics — due to bacteria (like Pasteurella multocida) in cat saliva.

If your pet catches wildlife, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.

Snakes like this one play an important role in keeping rodent populations in check — a reminder that every species has its place in a healthy ecosystem.
