This beautiful Pinto Mare has seen a lot in only 7 short years. CHEYENNE HAS HER FOREVER HOME!
Thanks to the dedicated team at "Horses with Hope" who found the perfect sanctuary where she will live for the rest of her life
HERE IS HER STORY AS TOLD IN THEIR WORDS:
This gorgeous 7 yro girl was saved from a Texas kill pen in the fall of 2024 by Gerda’s Equine Rescue. At that time, Cheyenne’s baby quite literally saved her life…It was the 6 month old c**t nursing by her side that drew the attention of rescuers who didn’t want to see them split up tragically in the chaos of the feed lot.
When Cheyenne arrived here for training in August of 2025, we knew immediately that her physical scars were only a small part of the healing that would need to take place. Her body had been badly broken at the hands of humans, with significant scarring on all four legs, muscular scarring on her neck, and a dropped hip.
Along with the physical trauma that she endured, she clearly had emotional scarring as well. She was defensive about being touched anywhere, but especially her feet and legs. She had developed a talent for kicking forward with a hind leg when her handler attempted to pick up a front leg, making it impossible to care for any of her feet properly.
On top of all of this, Cheyenne had very little education and therefore did not understand basic groundwork or what to do with pressure from her handler. With plenty of time, patience, and a plethora of different training techniques and support from fellow horse trainers, we began to witness the layers of fear, doubt, and trauma peel away. Cheyenne has now become a quiet and supportive member of the mare herd. She leads well, enjoys being groomed, is good for the vet, stands to have her feet taken care of, and loves working at liberty. Each day, we see her personality shine through more and more.
Sadly, even as the emotional scars are healing, the physical scars remain. Due to extensive damage to Cheyenne’s soft tissue structures in her legs, it would be unfair to ask her to carry the additional weight of a rider.
P.S.
We have immeasurable gratitude for "Horses With Hope" and for the kindness of the sanctuary welcoming Cheyenne!
From everyone at GER!
