insight, experience, patience It is a powerful tool that I love sharing with others.

Greetings Simsbury, CT, and vicinity:

I am an encourager by nature, and I love a good puzzle when it comes to the learning style of a human and the learning style of their dog. I taught ninth grade math for many years, and I am essentially endlessly patient when it comes to figuring out what can help someone (canine or human) learn how to learn. The most exciting and enduring factor in using posi

tive reinforcement for training and teaching is that it spills over into all kinds of other situations involving learning, communicating, and developing relationships. For the last five years, I have enjoyed working with 25 clients who trained in AKC agility or rally continuously and 27 others who took series of classes in beginning agility, puppy skills and manners, or private lessons. I am a retired English and math teacher with two masters degrees -- one in Sportsmedicine and one in Counseling Therapy. I have been training and competing with dogs in a serious way since 1993, starting in Huntsville, AL, continuing in Santa Barbara, CA for 18 years, and teaching more recently in my thriving business in southern Oregon. Deeply involved with therapy dogs since 1993, I have been an evaluator for Therapy Dogs International since 1997. Three of our family's Border Collies were certified as Disaster Stress Relief dogs; seven have been certified for volunteer work in hospitals, hospice, schools, and treatment facilities. I advised Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara in the development and supervision of their therapy dog program for many years. I currently compete in AKC agility with a young Border Collie and do therapy dog work with a retired agility dog who was highly successful in spite of being deaf. I competed in AKC obedience and rally obedience with our previous dogs. I am a professional member of APDT, the Association of Professional Dog Trainers and a member of the Dog Writers' Association of America. I am a judge for the annual writing contest for DWAA and have earned their coveted Maxwell Medallion recognition for both writing and photography. My husband and I moved to Simsbury in January 2022 to be closer to family and our childhood hometowns. I am continuing dog training and professional photography here, and I look forward to the wonderful connections that are achieved through our work with dogs. I look forward to meeting you!

Coming soon :-) .... details for group classes that start in September.....
Photography solicitation for today: I am seeking purebred puppy models for calendars and book publishers, along with (nearly) impeccably trained mature purebred dogs. Highly rewarding offer for dogs with amazing "stay" skills! Please be in touch if you have a purebred supermodel who would make a great candidate. Sample images here :-)

In addition to working with some wonderful private lesson clients this summer (new puppies, planning for new puppies arriving soon, littermates turning eight months-old, invisible fence training, mouthy biting, mugging family members who play rough, leash pulling and shredding), I am training with my own dogs in agility, Barn Hunt, and Scentwork.

I am also using quiet air-conditioned afternoons to take an extensive seminar on Aggression and Reactivity, with speakers from all over the world and subtopics that frequently come up with clients. If you're someone who trains in these areas or is seeking help in these areas, you might look for work done by these speakers or look up other topics from Ness Jones.

New England people with therapy dog candidates:

I have just secured three evaluation dates as an evaluator for Pet Partners. I will be using Pet Partners' procedures and guidelines, and prospective handlers need to register with PP and complete their prerequisite study (mostly about their expectations and protocols) in order to secure an evaluation appointment. Teams re-evaluate every two years, and there will be a mix of new teams and experienced teams applying for appointments. Interested handlers are welcome to contact me for more information.

I will need a group of 5-10 volunteers to role play a sequence of visit scenarios. If you enjoy community service related to dogs and people doing good work, or if you're curious about the process and want a front row seat, this is a great opportunity. Our hope will be to send a few new teams out to comfort people in a variety of settings. The time commitment for volunteers would be 4.5 hours with breaks in between teams being evaluated. Please be in touch if you'd like to help with this process.

Much gratitude to the folks at St Alban's Episcopal Church for their enthusiastic willingness to let us host these events on their premises.

Private lessons are available all summer long in the Simsbury/Granby/Farmington/Canton areas of Connecticut. Please be in touch if you'd like some one-on-one support with training your mature dog or young puppy. I have a flexible schedule around my own training commitments with our dogs.

I will take a break from group classes for the summer months and offer those again in September at Horse and Hounds, LLC, in Granby.

Here are some things I am currently working on with clients and their dogs:

Getting a good start with a young puppy that leads to a polite and well-adjusted dog who is pleasant to live with

Teaching skills that add to a dog's working vocabulary -- recall, check in, leave it, drop it, walk away, sit, down, stay, wait, tug, find it, loose leash walking, doing nothing

How to achieve a peaceful household with dogs with different needs

Raising a new puppy in the midst of an active household with young children, teenage children, or aging grandparents

Socializing and training a puppy with the hope of becoming a therapy dog team

Supporting an apprehensive rescue dog as it learns to enjoy neighborhood walks and woodland hiking

I look forward to meeting you and your dog!

I will have new dog training classes for clients in the Granby, Simsbury, and Suffield areas starting in May. After this series, I will take a break from group classes during the heat of summer and resume in the fall.

Private lessons continue in all seasons and are a great option for folks needing flexible scheduling or specific help in their home setting or neighborhood. Please be in touch if you need additional information or would like to schedule time. Descriptions follow, here:

Sundays
5/11 thru 6/8
Younger Puppies (3-6 mos) 10:15 to 11:15
Older Puppies (7 mos and up) 11:30 to 12:30

Thursdays
5/8 thru 6/5
Older Puppies (7 mos and up) 4:15 to 5:15

Cost for a series of five weekly classes is $265.88
Scholarships sometimes available

Younger Puppies
We start younger puppies off with basic skills and shaping of positive behaviors: sit, down, wait, follow on leash, hand touch, and recall. We practice shaping behaviors with clicker training, helping handlers with timing and treat delivery and helping puppies learn how much fun it is to play and learn with their humans. We discuss common challenges that often come with young dogs and brainstorm solutions. We work on impulse control, learning to do nothing, and learning to be polite and appropriate with other dogs and people.

Older Puppies
Puppies and young dogs come to this class with a variety of backgrounds. We work on developmentally appropriate skills and behaviors and start to refine loose leash walking. We add “leave it,” “walk away,” and “stay” to their repertoire and practice shaping and rewarding with clicker training, one of the most powerful tools for helping a dog learn what is expected and what will be rewarded. We work on “place” and add duration, distance, and distraction to the stay command with practice for dog and handler. We continue to talk about common goals and challenges and possible training solutions.

Private Lessons
Private lessons are available with flexible scheduling and are tailored to the specific needs of the dog and its living situation. Sessions typically last one hour and can be held virtually, at home, or at Horses and Hounds. Cost for a basic private lesson is $130 per hour (includes CT sales tax); more complex behavioral cases have a fee of $160 per hour. A travel fee is applied for lessons more than 25 minutes from Mary’s West Simsbury location.

I currently have five clients with a similar concern about their young dog: biting at clothing, biting at their leash, leaping to grab arms or wrists, tearing sweatshirts or pant legs. I often ask about the dog's opportunity for rambunctious fair-minded canine-style play. I ask if there are benevolent older dogs with great social skills in that dog's social life or a like-minded youngster of about the same size for galloping play in a safe place.

These two videos are great examples of tug play with two different toys, featuring littermates Gus and MacGyver, one year old. With the pink toy, all is fair and even-tempered in this sequence. They run back and forth, happily playing tug. No one breaks any rules.

SECOND VIDEO IN COMMENTS:

With the three-ring toy, Gus (a little leaner build, lighter in color) gets the upper hand with a firm grip and puts a paw over MacGyver's back (yellow flag). MacGyver has a twisted grip, is offended by the paw over his back, probably has an uncomfortable neck. He does sharp warning grips in quick succession, growling loudly and getting still. There is a brief stand-off with decision making about escalating the argument.

Gus decides to avoid a serious confrontation and drops the toy, letting MacGyver win and take possession --probably a good choice in order to have a willing play partner again in a few minutes.

Here in Connecticut, spring and summer are bringing back daylight and temperatures for adventures with our dogs! In this sweet spot before summer, I am returning to a schedule that includes two sections for Older Puppies/Young Dogs to meet with dogs in that age group who have made themselves at home over the fall and winter months. Send a message with questions.... I look forward to meeting you and your pup!

As always, private lessons are also available. I frequently work on neighborhood walk issues, preventing destruction from the landshark who now lives with you, or questions and concerns specific to a dog as it matures or a dog who has been rescued or rehomed. This post is about group classes, but please reach out if a private lesson might be a better match.

Mary has 30 years’ experience teaching obedience skills and manners at all levels and has been a therapy dog evaluator since 1997. Seven of her family dogs have worked as therapy dogs in hospitals, critical care units, assisted living facilities, and schools. She has competed in AKC obedience, rally, and agility with eight of her dogs; her border collie Satch earned MACH2 and was a certified Disaster Stress Relief Dog.

All classes use clicker training and positive reinforcement as the primary tool; it is exceptionally effective and transferable to teaching new behaviors independently. Classes focus on polite greetings of people and dogs, impulse control, basic skills for family living, and solutions for common challenges. As puppy skills increase and maturity grows, we introduce greater distractions and more complex tasks.

Payment for the series holds a spot in the class.

If you don’t see a class that fits your needs or your schedule, please inquire about private lessons. Mary’s schedule is flexible, and she travels a wide radius to meet with clients and families.

Polite Manners
This class will take the basic skills of sit, stay, recall, leave it, and walk away to the next level. We will practice with greater duration, distance, and distraction and will work on politely ignoring other dogs and people. We will work on impulse control and appropriate greetings. Dogs joining the class will need requisite skills to be approved for this level. We will practice rally obedience signs and short courses to refine heeling skills and handler distractions.

We seem to be on a Sunday and Thursday snow storm schedule here in northern CT..... I am getting lots of snowblower practice.

Seven-to-nine new inches of snow are anticipated Sat/Sunday Feb 15/16, and I have canceled that Sunday morning class at Horses and Hounds. As a result, the start of the new series of classes is amended again and looks like this:

01/27/2025

Folks in my current classes and private lessons have heard my strong suggestion to avoid teaching their puppy how to shake hands. Reaching out and entreating with an insistent paw is such a natural impulse for a puppy that it makes an easy behavior to train -- on purpose or inadvertently. My caution isn't made lightly.

Puppies and dogs are compiling data all day long.

What does the house smell like when dad usually gets back from errands? When I bark, someone looks at me. When I jump up, someone looks at me, puts hands on my shoulders, and talks to me. When people hang up their coats, line up their shoes, and push in the kitchen chairs, a guest is about to come down the driveway. When they call me in from the back yard and they're wearing work shoes, they're about to put me in the crate for hours.

When puppies get confused about what is expected, they offer something else from their data set, usually something that has been heavily reinforced or something that has been learned recently. Sit is often in their working vocabulary. Barking in frustration usually causes a reaction. Pawing, digging, scratching often makes things happen.

It is hard to extinguish behaviors that have been generously rewarded. An unexpected and uninvited "shake hands" can cause injury to fragile skin. My training pouch is stocked with bandages for puppy shark attacks, whether teeth or nails. Elderly friends or family members are sometimes frail or on blood thinners; cold winter weather sometimes leads to fragile skin. Children are easily painfully scratched.

In a recent puppy class, we worked on "down" as a command, using a treat to lure nose and elbows to the floor and clicking for better and better approximations. An exuberant puppy had recently been taught to "shake hands" by an excited neighborhood child. In its excitement, the puppy was confused about lying down and offered what had been recently reinforced: lunging with a paw. Short time out for bandaging, followed by a different plan for the following week with that puppy.

The box..... The box is a great tool for explaining luring, shaping, and capturing behaviors. Within two minutes, the clawing exuberant puppy was pretty quickly offering "down" with no command, just the reloading of the box. By the end of class, he was offering down from verbal commands without striking out with his paws. It was a valuable win for clicker training. (Check the box for damage that would have been forearms...)

When I get industrious, I will have to make one or two out of wood....
