People always ask how we can work during heatwaves, so we thought we could share some tips for how to keep your dogs happy and safe on these hot days
1. Know your dog. Every dog is different when it comes to heat tolerance. Age, medical conditions, short nose shape, and dark coats can make the heat intolerable. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and take precautions to prevent overheating
2. Know your surfaces. Streets and sidewalk surfaces can get very hot. Pavement and sand can cause burned paws. Look for grass or dirt during walks
3. Know your neighborhood. Find tree lined streets to seek out shade, and grassy areas for hot paw breaks.
4. Bring water. There are so many options for portable water pouches, waistpacks, and dog bowls. Keep your dog hydrated and use the extra water to cool off their paws
5. Take it slow. Dogs tire faster in the heat, so no need to break any speed records on a hot day. Take breaks
6. Go for a swim. Nothing beats the heat like being submerged in the water. Make sure to check if pond and lake water are safe and clean enough for dog swimming
