Equitation Tips – Impulsion

In this second video from the Equitation Tip Series, Bernie looks at a common trait that the top equitation horses in the country share. They are all in front of their riders’ legs, allowing for beautiful upward transitions that appear to be invisible. These horses are trained by their riders to be light to the leg and Bernie shows us how to achieve this with your horse. The goal is to produce a communication with your horse in which your aids are so light as to be invisible. I believe in simplicity when starting young or green horses over jumps, teaching very basic concepts in order to develop a strong foundation for more extensive future training over fences. Working on calmness, straightness, and management of track around the ring are some very basic principles I like to introduce while using poles on the ground.

Keep in mind that every horse is different and learns at their own speed. Be patient and keep it simple. Learn more about my approach in my three-part series on starting a young or green horse over jumps. The series outlines the progressive exercises and time frame one can adapt to the individual horse. Lesson part one-link in bio. Big thanks to and Conquistador for the wonderful demonstration throughout this series.
