And before people twist this into “hating rescue dogs,” my own dog Fiona came from a cruelty case at 12 weeks old. I raised her, trained her, & committed to giving her the structure & stability she needed from day one.

But just 4 years later, I had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her go as her world & the circle of people she could safely exist around, got smaller & smaller.

Rescue dogs absolutely deserve compassion, advocacy, & responsible placement. But compassion without honesty helps no one — not the dog, not the adopter, and not the community.

Puppyhood can feel chaotic sometimes, but this stage isn’t about having a perfect dog overnight. It’s about building confidence, communication, & trusting one small lesson at a time. The foundation you create now is what shapes the dog they become later.

At 11 years old, the mindset and motivation are still there but just expressed in new ways. Swimming keeps her strong, mobile, and engaged, giving her a safe, low impact outlet without stressing aging joints.
