In recognition of Arbor Day today, a day of appreciation for the role of the importance that trees play in our ecosystem, as well as the beauty that they bring to our lives, we're once again spending the day planting new trees in our arboretum and tending to the existing collection that abound across our estate. On this pleasant spring day, we hope you have the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the natural world that is all around you.

Even with an over 30° temperature swing in less than a day, our climate-sensitive plants and delicate sprouting seedlings are kept cozy in our greenhouses along with the new plants that we're beginning to harden-off for outdoor planting season.

Though we've long been dedicated caretakers of our estate's pristine natural surroundings, we're even more proud to also now have been recognized this year as a Stewardship Forest by the United States Forest Service and the New Jersey Divison of Forestry for, in their words, a "commitment to a land stewardship ethic that focuses on sustainable forests, providing wood products, fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, soil productivity, aesthetics and recreation - as a valuable legacy for future generations."

Our long term mission is to continue to responsibly manage our woodlands and even further enhance the natural beauty of our historical estate.

Our leek and other allium seedlings are progressing quickly in our greenhouse as we ramp up our staggered seed starting preparations with a muti-sow method heading into spring.

As with growing all plants from seed, timing for the particular species and variety is a key factor for optimizing harvest schedules. With leek seed germination time of around two weeks and allowing time for growth, a typical start time of around 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost is advisable for the first round of leeks. Depending on type (short season vs. long season) leeks' days-to-maturity usually range between 55 and 180 days. The clock is ticking!

There's a little extra meaning behind the newest addition to our collection of botanical art & illustrations: This particular print was created by artist and landscape architect, Joan E. Furlong.

She is the granddaughter of Ethelbert E. Furlong, the original landscape architect who made significant contributions to the design of our estate's gardens and grounds nearly a century ago.

The illustration features the seed pod of a Southern Magnolia ('Magnolia grandiflora'), which is apropos for our estate, as we have several cultivars that can be found throughout our grounds.

Through her dual talents, Ms. Furlong is a memeber of both the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Society Botanical Artists. For those interested in exploring more of Ms. Furlong's work, she can be found through these organizations or her own "Vox Loci" Studio.
