We work to place homeless animals in loving homes, promote humane treatment, and foster a deeper appreciation of the human-animal bond. The West Milford Animal Shelter Society, Inc. (WMASS) is a 100% volunteer organization and IRS recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was formed in 1976 out of a desperate need to establish an adoption program at the West Milford Animal Shelter, a munici

pal facility. Many cats and dogs arrive annually, seeking shelter, love, attention, and veterinary care from the WMASS. The WMASS also shelters other domestic animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas, and birds, as well as injured or orphaned, young wildlife. At any point in time, the shelter houses between 50-100 cats/kittens and about 12 dogs. Just a few hours a week can make a huge difference in the lives of these homeless animals. Volunteers donate a lot of time and effort. It’s hard work...but the rewards of getting a lot of bright eyes, love and happy tails make it all worthwhile. The shelter is open Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, Wednesday evening 7:30 - 9:00 pm and Saturday/Sunday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. They can be reached at 973-728-2859.

Looking for the perfect cup of tea?

Earl Grey is an affectionate boy and is looking for someone to love. He greets every visitor to the Big Cattery and rubs up against their legs to introduce himself. Earl has a clingy and social nature, and always wants to be by his people.

He passes the time by pawing at toys alongside our volunteers and nudging us for pets. With his endless energy, Earl would do wonderfully with someone who can dedicate plenty of time to interactive play.

He meshes nicely with other cats and individuals who do not mind a new definition of personal space. We love our gray buddy beyond words, and we cannot wait for him to find his home.

This pretty girl came to us from an overcrowded home over a year and a half ago. She was always rather quiet and reserved, and the commotion of people made her nervous. Her trust in other cats never wavered, though; she had limited vision and took cues from kitties nearby. They were her lifeline.

The majority of visitors were not interested in a timid senior, and they frowned upon her flinching at their approach. However, a kind mother and daughter stopped by and took the time to sit with her last month. Our friend responded to them in the way she had not yet to anyone else, as if to let them know she was ready. They understood.

This handsome boy was found dumped in a carrier on the side of the road. He was brought into safety after being discovered by one of our volunteers. A note was taped to the carrier detailing his personality and birthday, and he was evidently friendly.

Upon settling in, our mini house panther showed his playful side and pawed at interactive toys with each visitor. He was affectionate and energetic, and we knew he would keep his new family entertained with his mischievous nature. To no surprise, it did not take long for someone to fall in love with him.

Arthur... ADOPTED!

Put your paws together for Arthur, everyone! He makes the perfect duo with his canine sibling, and he has plenty of his favorite crinkly kicker toys.

Yes 🙌🏼 our foster pup, AL, was out hiking and enjoying the lake today! This boy loves to swim! He’s making more human and doggy friends. (Swimming videos to follow)…. He has so many awesome qualities. Anyone interested in him please call to make an appointment and his foster mom can certainly answer lots of questions for you also. When a dog gets out of a shelter and into a home environment, we really get to see their personality.
