Yesterday, George E. Ross Jr. DVM died. He was 89 years old.
For the first 10 years of my career, he was my employer and mentor at Colonial Veterinary Hospital in Ithaca, NY.
He was one of the first Board Certified Surgeons in veterinary medicine. He also worked in general practice, and it is here that he shaped my career and life.
Every aspect of my work in veterinary medicine is touched by his influence; his relentless adherence to the highest standards of care; his respect and love for his patients and pet parents; and his integrity in his work.
George absolutely loved what he did. He was passionate about everything: his family, his music, his horse, his cacti and life. At one point, he had a kennel called Night Call – and he bred and showed blood hounds. That alone speaks volumes.
My love of my work and my deep regard for the importance of mentorship track to George.
It was an honor to learn from him and work alongside him in “God’s Work,” – this term from Tom Huddleston, DVM- another of my mentors.
His legacy is broad. I carry him with me always, and hear his voice and see his hands in surgery – and give deep thanks for an extraordinary veterinarian and person.
His son, Tom Ross – also a board-certified surgeon – still works in the practice. He worked next to his dad for much of his career. In Colonial Veterinary Hospital, George’s legacy lives on, daily changing the lives of pets and people for the better.
Rest in peace, George.
Thank you,
Estelle Ward, DVM
