🦝 Animal Spotlight: Meet Wilbur! 💚

Say hello to Wilbur, our newest animal ambassador here at Randall Oaks Zoo!

Wilbur came to us in March from Lisa’s Little Rescue after spending some time as a pet — but here’s a fun fact: opossums don’t make good pets! Their unique nutritional and environmental needs are best suited for the wild. We’d much rather see them in our backyards helping out nature!

🌟 Cool Opossum Facts:
🍼 North America’s only marsupial — like kangaroos and wallabies!
👶 Their babies (called joeys) are born the size of a jellybean and grow in mom’s pouch.
🧼 They’re nature’s clean-up crew — eating ticks, carrion, and even venomous snakes!

Wilbur is now part of our Traveling Zoo team, visiting schools, camps, and nursing homes, or cruising the zoo in style with our resident opossum whisperer, Kath Ellinghausen. 🛒💨

We’re so excited to have him in the Randall Oaks Zoo family. Next time you visit, keep an eye out for Wilbur on one of his adventures!

🦎🌍 Happy World Lizard Day from Randall Oaks Zoo! 🌞🌿

Today we’re celebrating all things scaly, sun-loving, and spectacular — and that includes one of our favorite reptile residents, Arlo the Egyptian Spiny-Tailed Lizard! 💛

Here are a few fun facts about Arlo and his lizard cousins:

🦎 Arlo is an Egyptian Spiny-Tailed Lizard, known for his spiky tail and impressive digging skills.
🌵 These lizards are desert dwellers, thriving in hot, dry environments.
🌞 Like all reptiles, Arlo is cold-blooded, so he loves to bask in the sun (or under a warm heat lamp here at the zoo!).
🛡️ His spiny tail helps protect him from predators — and it looks pretty cool, too!

Come by and say hi to Arlo today — or share your favorite lizard memory below! 👇

Please give a warm welcome to our newest (and fluffiest) residents—Legolas and Gimli, a pair of 4-month-old Southdown Babydoll Sheep! 🐏💚

In true Lord of the Rings fashion:
🧝Legolas (white) is our gentle, shy explorer.

📣🐾 Zookeeper Spotlight: Meet Harmony

Now, you may have met Harmony a few years back in earlier newsletters, but this girl deserves another spotlight.

Prior to joining the team, she received her bachelor’s degree from UIUC with a minor in East Asian language and culture. She also studied abroad in South Korea and would love to go back someday.

She began her career at Randall Oaks Zoo as a summer intern in 2018. Since then, she has worked her way up to the highest animal care status: an animal care lead. Being an animal care lead is a great honor. Keepers reach out to the care leads throughout the day with any animal concerns and questions. These concerns or questions are then either brought to our animal curator or our leads will take on the responsibility of solving these issues.

Harmony has always been a hard working, caring worker who always puts the animals first. When she is not training Gracie the llama or holding Echo on her forearm, she enjoys crocheting, listening to psychology podcasts, and watching horror movies with friends.

What is her life's motto? Just enjoy the ride and make people laugh. Thank you for everything that you do Harmony! We love you girl!

🌟 Animal Spotlight: Meet Butch! 🐴

Meet Butch, our 24-year-old pony. He has called Randall Oaks Zoo his home since 2017 and is one of our favorite animals because of his sweet personality.

Before Butch moved in with Elmer the camel and Red the mini horse, he used to work on our pony wheel. He was the best, allowing the smallest children ride his back, not minding it one bit. When tired, he would simply rest his face on the pole and fall asleep.

His riding days are now over since he is too old to work the wheel, but you may see him come out of his enclosure to do animal meet and greets with our camp kids and for other events.

Horses and ponies are part of the same genus Equus caballus. How can you tell the difference between the two? It is all about height. Ponies measure 14.2 hands (a hand is 4 inches) or less.

They are strong animals full of personality and come in different breeds.

Don’t let Butch’s size fool you. He is the boss in his enclosure. Elmer the camel will not train if Butch gets in the way! When he is not eating his hay or bossing around the others in the yard, you may find him sunbathing on the ground.
