Chronic Kidney disease is one of the most
common diseases affecting older cats.

It affects around 40% of cats older than 10 years old and around 80% of cats over 15 years old.

For this reason, we recommend yearly bloodwork and urinalysis to check your cat's kidney function starting when your cat is at least 10 years old.
If you have any questions or concerns, give us a call to schedule an appointment!

A common disorder for middle-aged and older cats is Hyperthyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism occurs in about 10% of older cats and is caused by an overactive thyroid gland.
Common symptoms are increased drinking, increased urination, and weight loss even when your cat has a normal appetite. It can be treated quite easily with medication and even radioiodine therapy.

Does your cat have a microchip?

A microchip is an RFID tag that's inserted under the skin, lasts their whole lifetime, and is connected to your name and contact information!

In case your cat finds its way outdoors, the microchip can be scanned at any veterinary clinic or many adoption locations. Even if your cat stays indoors, it's not a bad idea to have a microchip just in case your cat slips out one day! If you don't know if your cat has a microchip or not, just ask at your next appointment!

A common question we get is:

Does my cat need flea and tick medication even though they stay indoors?

Great question!

The answer is:

Yes, it is recommended. Indoor pets can still get fleas and ticks! A couple of ways that your indoor cat can get fleas/ticks is by catching mice, flies, spiders in your house. They also can get them from you or another pet such as a dog that goes outside the house daily. To keep your cat protected, even if they stay indoors, it is recommended you apply a monthly protection, especially during the warmer months! There are many options so make sure to talk to your veterinarian about which one is best for your cat!

One of the more common questions we get is: "What is the FVRCP vaccine for?" So let's break it down!

1. (FVR) stands for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis which is a respiratory virus that can cause your cat to have symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose and eye discharge.

2. (C) stands for Feline Calicivirus. This is a gastrointestinal virus that can cause your cat to have symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and ulcers.

3. (P) stands for Feline Panleukopenia virus, also known at feline distemper. This is a highly contagious virus that can cause severe bone marrow depression, leading to anemia, fever, and death.

The RCP vaccine is typically given first when the kitten is 6-8 weeks, then when the kitten is 10-12 weeks, and then when the kitten is 14-16 weeks. After these 3 initial vaccinations, your cat will only need the booster RCP vaccine every 1-3 years.

If you have any questions or concerns about your cat getting the RCP vaccine, please don't hesitate to talk to our doctors when you come in for your appointment!
