Another update: Bill & Bell

Bill has a puppy dog personality. Always watching you if you are in his sight. He started off as a horse that would startle at the slightest touch and now you can touch him anywhere. He is a love. His CPL in his back legs are his downfall. He went through a round of antibiotics and low dose steroids which helped. Along with that a deworming and mite treatment on his legs. The weeping and stomping has stopped and his leg had gone down over 50% but then the rain and humidity hit and we saw it filling back up. Essentially his lymph system does not work properly and lymph fluid pools in his leg. Our girl Tessa has CPL also and she’s been on antibiotics in the past for secondary infection when it weeps. She’s always on cleavers/marigold for lymph support (same with Bill) but the best thing we’ve done is turn her out on the large acreage pastures with hay on one side and water on the other. Walking the hills and fields has helped her immensely and you barely can tell the difference between her two legs. The next step for Bill is larger turnout. 🤞

Bell, she’s blind on one side, more nervous than Bill and thin. She’s gaining well and loves her feeds of soaked grain throughout the day. She’s much sweeter with us but still nervous on her blind side. She unfortunately has irreversible damage to her back legs. She moves well but we know it’s a matter of time before her legs will be the reason to say goodbye. For now she’s getting time, food, and love.

Sweet old lady Olive.

It’s been a slow go to get her sound again. She’s doing MUCH better and at this point we want to see her lay down and get up on her own before reuniting with her herd. We know she’s laid down but have not seen it. We have had some older Belgians need help up once and never again, others needing it occasionally and others that we had to have then put to rest due to their failing ability to rise. Hopefully this was a one and done deal for her now that her hoof is better. 🤞

Sharing again…. This is a super important fundraiser for us. Yes it’s not a “fun” one but with the drought this year our family’s hay production wasn’t what it typical is meaning CHFS will be buying a lot more hay than normal 😩

This week our favorite hay guy told us he would not be putting up any second cutting due to the lack of growth from the drought 😢 As a nonprofit that caters to senior equines the lack of second cutting has us concerned. But last night he sent me a message saying he was willing to put in the effort and time to get what he could for us 💕

Financially for a farmer when the yield is low it just isn’t worth the time and fuel to process a crop so for him to do this for us we are very grateful.

This week we are looking for help with the cost of buying up to 100 round bales of second cutting at $50 each. Last weeks dental appointments solidified how important that soft tender second cutting is and now is our chance to acquire some of what we need.

Thank you Landon for putting in the work to get this for us! And thank you to our followers and supporters for donating towards our hay fund.

Our Goal: $5,000

Total to reach Goal : $4000 Thank you Nicole, Becky, Gloria, Kris, Beth, Lynne & JoAnne for donating!
