Another update: Bill & Bell
Bill has a puppy dog personality. Always watching you if you are in his sight. He started off as a horse that would startle at the slightest touch and now you can touch him anywhere. He is a love. His CPL in his back legs are his downfall. He went through a round of antibiotics and low dose steroids which helped. Along with that a deworming and mite treatment on his legs. The weeping and stomping has stopped and his leg had gone down over 50% but then the rain and humidity hit and we saw it filling back up. Essentially his lymph system does not work properly and lymph fluid pools in his leg. Our girl Tessa has CPL also and she’s been on antibiotics in the past for secondary infection when it weeps. She’s always on cleavers/marigold for lymph support (same with Bill) but the best thing we’ve done is turn her out on the large acreage pastures with hay on one side and water on the other. Walking the hills and fields has helped her immensely and you barely can tell the difference between her two legs. The next step for Bill is larger turnout. 🤞
Bell, she’s blind on one side, more nervous than Bill and thin. She’s gaining well and loves her feeds of soaked grain throughout the day. She’s much sweeter with us but still nervous on her blind side. She unfortunately has irreversible damage to her back legs. She moves well but we know it’s a matter of time before her legs will be the reason to say goodbye. For now she’s getting time, food, and love.
