As a small breeder/business we pride ourselves in allowing customers to interact with our geckos. We want people to feel comfortable with the reptile they are bringing home. We want people to not be afraid of reptiles and to be able to ask any questions they may have. Do we have a locked display case we could use? Yes. But we chose not to use them.
However, today we experienced our first, and hopefully last, theft. During the show one of our leachianus geckos “disappeared” off the table. As a small business, this is a really big loss. Not only a monetary loss (which is huge) but also a loss of trust and motivation. As people, who genuinely enjoy this hobby this is really discouraging.
We will definitely be rethinking how we setup and run things in the future. As much as we like being hands on we may have to consider more security measures such as cameras and locked cases. It sucks to have to take the focus away from helping people have positive experiences all because people choose to take what doesn’t belong to them. When in reality most breeders only care about the health and wellbeing of the reptile that was taken!
I could ask people to keep a look out for our leachie but we know in reality chances are we will probably never see this little girl again. I can only hope that whoever look her takes care of her or makes sure that she ends up in a home that knows what they are doing!
P.S. this post is worded a lot more professional then how I feel inside at this point in time 🤦🏻♀️😉🤷🏻♀️
