With calls coming in for info on where to spay/neuter we are hearing more and more that owners are waiting too long to schedule. A female cat/dog should be spayed before her first heat cycle. If she is an adult she needs to be scheduled upon homing. An adult male cat should be done as same to alleviate the potential of spraying. For an adult male dog it will help to alleviate the raised leg and aggressive behavior. And, if there is an unspayed female in the house, there is no need for unnecessary litters. There are too many pets needing a home as it is. Only 30% of cats over 3 years old get adopted. Think of that .....
If you get a female kitten/puppy immediately schedule for when she will be between 4-1/2 to 5 months old. Yes, they can be spayed earlier and some vets will do so. Shelters and rescues will spay/neuter earlier since they are adopting out and they cannot risk unnecessary litters.
The old wives tale of waiting until the female has her first heat is detrimental to her overall well-being. Each heat cycle puts the female at risk for down-the-road issues with mammary tumors / cancer. AND, she is at extreme high risk for the potential of pyometra, which is uterine infection. This infection can cause an emergency situation that risks her life and can cost thousands of dollars in surgical costs. Do you have those kinds of funds to spare when it can be done low-cost? Example: Emergency cat spay can cost $3K, dog spay depending on size $3-6K.
A male cat/dog can be neutered earlier than the female, around 4 months. This helps to alleviate the potential for spraying/leg lifting. Be aware that even after the neuter it may take 3-4 weeks for the testosterone to deplete and if there is an unspayed female in the house she is still at risk for possible impregnation. In addition, a male is at risk if it has an undescended testicle. If not neutered it can become cancerous as it ages. Also, they are at risk for prostate issues.
Unfortunately, after 14 years and over 5,000 coming through us, BCAWL has not been able to schedule their low-cost clinics recently due to owners not stepping up to do so. We cannot fill the required appointment numbers. BUT, that does not mean there are not other options. We are looking at other options ourselves but do not wait - schedule now.
Give us a call at 304-374-4443 for info on clinics. We are here to help and advise.
Please be a responsible pet owner - spay & neuter.
