RTN Summer Herding Symposium 2026

RTN Summer Herding Symposium 2026 Each beginning student will be matched with a mentor to work with during the week—and hopefully into the future. Escape the heat of the city and join us!

RTN's Summer Herding Symposium 2026 - July 6 - 10th
Note: French Course trial on Wednesday July 1st, AHBA BTD/JBD July 2nd, RLF July 3, HRD July 4th and Invitational RTN HGH Exhibition and judges education July 5th. At Rancho Terra Norté we believe in creating a community of learning and this year’s Summer Symposium is designed to bring together herding enthusiasts of all levels in one place for

a week-long emersion of all disciplines of herding (AKC A, B, and C courses, ASCA, USBC, AHBA, test and trial levels). There are sessions for those who are just starting to learn about herding & tending taught by wonderful instructors who pride themselves in developing sound foundations on their students and establishing safe working habits. For those who understand the basics—there are fundamental building and intro to trial course sessions. This year we have added extra days to work with ducks/geese along with the Intro classes on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Mechanics & trial strategy sessions are designed for those dog & handler teams that are working on that competitive edge. Since livestock is an essential component to any herding program—we are offering sessions on herd health & management, appropriate stock selection practices, sheep psychology and fence construction. In addition to sessions relating to working stock—we are also offering Pet Health classes on Conditioning for the Canine Athlete including Chiropractic, Acupuncture and the use of Chinese Herbs, and First Aid for the Sport Dog. Your dog is a valuable team member - these sessions are designed to help keep him on top of his game. Can't attend in person - we offer our classroom sessions via Zoom. Looking for another reason to attend RTN’s Summer Symposium? How about spending a week at the foot of the Rocky Mountains during the best part of the summer season? Here on the high plains—we enjoy sunny breezy days that cool off in the evenings.

Yesterday was Day 4 of the RTN herding marathon and we had a phenomenal day at Judy Stachurski’s North Pond Farm in Wellington, CO at our first SV mock HGH (Herding Utility Dog
trial). We had a lovely course that showcased the skill sets necessary for a Shepherd and his or her dog. There were 5 entries which included 4 GSDs and 1
Belgian Malinois. We are honored to have SV judge Kerstin Smietana officiate our match. Now one step closer towards being able to offer GSDCA SV herding events. Special thanks to our sponsors: The Dupzke Ranch Trust, Royal Canin, and Cindra
Grooming Products.

Tonight we are at the Greeley Stampede watching the championship night PRCA rodeo with our visiting German judges. A little Americana for them. The cowboys are not disappointing the sold out crowd. Tomorrow we start the trials with French Course. We also visited North Pond Farm where we are staging the SV HGH mock trial on Sunday morning starting at 9am. Let me know if you want to come watch and learn!

Along with our working session instructors - the 2025 Summer Herding Symposium has a trio of very special faculty members who are teaching our alternative learning workshops.

SCENTWORK & BARNHUNT
Dave Stanford and his wife Jenny reside in Evans, CO with their two GSDs Peyton and Athena. As a retired middle school science teacher, Dave brings together is gift for teaching and his passion for dog sports. He and Peyton are active competitors in herding, scentwork, and barn hunt.

RTN is thrilled he will be working with symposium students by leading the Intro to Barnhunt on Tuesday July 8 and Intro to Scentwork workshop on Wednesday July 9th.

CARTING
Britney Mazzer and her Rottweilers do everything - including carting. While Rotts are her breed - Britney enjoys working with all breeds, big and small. This year, Britney is going to be one of the fundamental level instructors. She is also going to share her love for carting at this year's Carting Workshop scheduled for Monday evening July 7th.

TRACKING
Jill Grant is a multi-venue competitor and instructor. Jill and her Rotties do it all - Conformation, Obedience, Rally, Herding, Carting and Tracking. Jill and her husband reside in Longmont where she works from home as a technical writer/editor.

We feel very fortunate that Jill is our tracking resource. Her Tracking lecture will be on Tuesday July 8th and workshop (July 10th) are very popular sessions.

Today we are shining the spotlight on Catherine Hadley one of our Blue track Stock Dog instructors:

Catherine saw a herding trial at the age of 8 and decided that’s what she wanted to do. Despite almost always having a herding breed in her life, Catherine was never allowed to have sheep, and had to wait until she moved to Alaska to buy a farm and have her own stock. Due to the lack of trainers in Alaska, Catherine’s early training was done with books and videos, with the occasional lesson or clinic from trial judges. Many plane trips later to the Lower 48, Aurora became Alaska’s first AKC Herding Champion and eventually completed a WTCH and HTCH.

In 2022, Catherine moved to Casper, Wyoming for the chance to train and trial throughout the year. That proved to be a wise decision, and Catherine and Nessie were the 2025 National Western Stock Show Sheep Champions. Catherine enjoys working with new handlers and dogs and loves the “lightbulb” moments when it all clicks. Catherine raises and trains Border Collies and Aussies, but has trained and trialed many breeds to include corgis, shelties, Rotties, Samoyeds, and even Boxers. Catherine is currently an AHBA herding judge and AKC Farm Dog Certifier and CGC Evaluator. She is working towards an AKC herding judge. She also participates in obedience, rally, and agility.
