To Our Valued Community,

Dr. Frank Coleman, a pillar of Weiser Veterinary Clinic since 1982, is retiring after more than 40 years of meaningful service. During his time at Weiser, he’s shared his expertise, mentored our team, and created meaningful bonds with families and their pets across generations. Though his daily presence will be deeply missed, we celebrate this next phase of well-deserved relaxation, and we send our warmest wishes as he embarks on new adventures, including enjoying plenty of time by the water –of course, fishing.

We have been getting a lot of questions regarding the recent equine herpesvirus outbreak. As of now, there are no confirmed positive cases in Idaho. However, the extent of the spread of this disease is still unfolding as veterinarians across the country are working diligently to trace all horses with known exposure and we are all taking necessary precautions to avoid further spread.

Here are some recommendations from the American Association of Equine Practitioners and, as always, we are here to answer any questions you may have!

As we continue to monitor the current outbreak of the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus (EHM) infection, let's take this opportunity to discuss once more the importance of biosecurity measures to stop disease spread. We recommend the following biosecurity precautions for horse owners, particularly if their horses have recently traveled to horse shows or were exposed to horses that have traveled:

1) Monitor horses for clinical signs (including fever, discharge from the nostrils, toe-dragging or a lack of balance) and take the temperature twice daily. Temperature greater than 101.5 F is considered a fever.

2) Immediately isolate any horse(s) showing clinical signs. Equine herpesvirus is an aerosolized virus and is spread through shared airspace, direct contact, and contaminated caretakers or equipment. A good isolation area is a separate barn or shelter that does not share airspace with healthy horses.

3) Implement movement restrictions until the situation is evaluated.

4) Contact your veterinarian to evaluate your horse and to propose a comprehensive biosecurity protocol.

5) Increase biosecurity measures that include extensive cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and equipment that come in contact with affected horses: wash or sanitize your hands between interacting with horses; take time while filling water buckets and feed tubs, do not cross contaminate; minimize the use of shared equipment and tack.

6) Make sure your horse is up to date on vaccinations.

7) Establish communication with all parties involved (owners, boarders, trainers, etc.).

More resources and information regarding biosecurity are available on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at https://equinediseasecc.org/biosecurity

UPDATE: Owner found and they are reunited! ❤️

Found dog!

A Good Samaritan found this guy wandering on highway 95 near sunnyside road. He has a collar and tags from kitsap humane society but they are not open to call and get owner info. He does have a microchip but the information is tied to an Anthony Andrews in Massachusetts. We need to get this guy home today as we are not a shelter and not staffed tomorrow! If anyone recognizes him let’s help get him home!

🚨Please Read- Abandoned Animals at Weiser Vet Clinic🚨

This morning, a litter of Kittens and two bags of food were left at our clinic staff's door with a note letting us know that the person who left them was unable to keep them in their living environment. These kittens appear to be well cared for and were left by the door after our first employee arrived in the morning.

💔While our hearts go out to every animal in need, we are here to help whenever we can. We are not equipped to care for abandoned animals.

It is our moral obligation to do what we can in these situations- and that is what we are doing- but this is not sustainable, we do not have the resources or staff to care for unplanned surrender or abandonment.

If you are ever in a situation where you can no longer care for an animal. Please reach out first. We are happy to provide you with a local shelter or support organization that can help.

Please call us at 208-549-0944 - We are here to help and guide you in the right direction, but we cannot be a drop-off point for unwanted animals.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us care responsibly for all pets in our community and clinic.

Today is a shoutout to our amazing clients! Just this week, we have had one client install a camera system in our equine wing to further improve our patient care and monitoring and another wonderful client treated the team to an amazing lunch from The Market in Weiser!

It is a team effort taking care of the animals in our community and we are thankful for some of the very best clients around!
