New foal exams are crucial!
A newborn foal exam (neonatal examination) is one of the most time-sensitive and critical assessments in equine veterinary medicine. Foals are uniquely vulnerable — they transition rapidly from a protected intrauterine environment to independent life, and problems can become life-threatening within hours.
Why is it urgent-
Unlike many species, foals are precocial — they must stand, nurse, and be mobile very quickly. Their passive immune system depends entirely on absorbing antibodies from colostrum within the first 12–24 hours (gut closure). Missing this window can be fatal.
The 1-2-3 RULE
• 1 hour — foal should stand
• 2 hours — foal should be nursing
• 3 hours — placenta should be passed by the mare
